One of the most culturally rich and colourful countries in the world, Iran is an open-air museum brimming with architectural wonders and bustling bazaars. Iran is a must-visit destination for any culture vulture or for those looking for a new and unique experience.
On this journey we’ll show you the highlights of the country. We use the best guides who will delve into the 2,500 years of Persian history, from taking you to the most important and beautiful mosques and ancient ruins, to the buzzing restaurants of today’s world. Marvel at the ever changing scenery as you travel from city to city, passing through rural towns, valleys laden with colourful flowers and deserts fringed with snow-capped mountains.
Day 1: Arrive in Iran
On arrival into Tehran airport, you will be met in the arrival halls by a Lightfoot Travel representative and privately transferred to your hotel.
Day 2: Tehran
Today enjoy your first taste of Iran. Your guide will collect you from your hotel and show you the main highlights of the capital, revealing how contemporary culture and conservative traditionalist lie side by side in the city. Visit sights such as the carpet museum, jewellery museum, Golestan Palace and bustling bazaar.
Day 3: Shiraz: Qur'an Gate and Delgosha Garden
Early this morning you will be collected from your hotel and driven to the airport for a domestic flight to Shiraz, where on arrival you will be met and taken to your hotel in Shiraz. Spend the rest of the day getting to know this stunning region, which as you will see is a stark contrast to Tehran.
Your guide will take you to Qur’an Gate and Delgosha Garden. The former was first built during the reign of Adud ad-Dawla, and at once had held two hand written Qur’ans; and the latter is one of the historical gardens in Shiraz. Walk through this famous garden which is lined with citrus trees and hoe to the Sa’di’s Tomb Canal.
Day 4: Shiraz: continue your exploration
Continue your tour of Shiraz, the city of roses and nightingales which was once home to famous poets, scholars and artists who loved Shiraz for its beauty. Among the sights you will see today are the Zand complex, which houses the Karim Khan Citadel and Vakil Mosque; the Mausoleum of the 8th-century poet Hafaz; the main bazaar and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Eram Gardens.
Day 5: Persepolis & Naqsh-e Rust
This morning you will be driven northeast of Shiraz to the ancient ruined city of Persepolis. This palace complex was founded by Darius 1 in the Sixth Century BC, and today the magnificent ruins make it one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites due to the important and quality of the ruins.
Visit the other UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pasargadae, the first dynamic capital of the Arachaemenid Empire, with its spectacular palaces, gardens and the mausoleum of Cyrus. Before being driven the five hours to Yazd, stop at the tombs of Naqsh-e Rustam and marvel at the impressive carvings which depict the conquests of Sassanid Kings.
Day 6: Yazd
Located between two of Iran’s largest deserts, Yazd is an oasis town famous for its unique architecture. The old town is a labyrinth of secret passages, bazaars and mud brick streets, unchanged for centuries, and is an important centre for Zoroastrianism (one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions, founded some 3,500 years ago).
Sites you will see today include the Amir Chaghmagh Complex, jame Mosque, the Coins and Wate Museum, and the Zartosht Temple.
Day 7: Isfahan
This morning you will be driven to Isfahan, stopping in the ancient desert town of Na’in enroute. As you continue to Isfahan, you will notice the scenery start to change and become more varied as the road climbs up hill.
Isfahan reminds the world of the glories of Persia and is regarded as one of the most beautiful Islamic cities in the world. Wander down to the Zayandeh River to witness the hustle and bustle of Its riverbanks, which are buzzing with the activity of local life.
Day 8: Explore Isfahan
Spend the day exploring Isfahan with your guide. View the city’s expansive collection of Islamic architecture, including the beautiful Imam Square, the second largest square in the world and arguable the city’s most impressive sights. Comprised of a large ensemble of majestic buildings, visit the Imam mosque which towers over the southern side of the square with its magnificent blue dome, the bazaar and Sheikh Loftallah mosque which exhibits exquisitely detailed tile work.
You may also want to visit other major sites such as the Decorative Arts Museum and Jolfa and Atigh Square.
Day 9: Kashan & departure
Spend the morning exploring the historical Persian Fin Gardens and the hammam complex, best known as being the place where Iranian nationalist hero Amir Kabir was murdered. Visit Kashan houses including Broojerdiha House and Tabatabai house.
Following your excursion you will be driven to the airport in time for your return flight home.
