Classic Cuba

Cuba has always held the imagination of intrepid travellers, and there is no better time than the present to visit. Situated in the beautiful Caribbean, the capital Havana has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as has the 16th century city of Trinidad. This 9-day itinerary brings you through both these destinations as well as the beautiful Vinales Valley.

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival, make your way through immigration, customs & collect your luggage. At the arrival hall your guide will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel. Hotel Saratoga, a boutique hotel, is conveniently located on the corner of Paseo del Prado and Dragones in Old Havana, Cuba’s historic capital.

Day 2: Exploring Havana

Today’s full day private tour of Havana is focused on the Colonial & Modern sides of the city. In 1982, Havana’s historic city centre was declared a UNESCO world cultural heritage site, and there is no city in Latin America with a larger colonial centre. Take a walking tour of the old city centre along the alleyways and across the squares of Old-Havana: Plaza de Armas, Templete, Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Vieja, Hemingway’s “Bodeguita”. Also, pass by the Malecón, Hotel Nacional, Avenida de los Presidentes, Plaza de la Revolución, Quinta Avenida and much more. This is a very flexible day based on your preferences and requirements.

Day 3: Visiting Vinales

Today embark on an early start for a full day private excursion to Pinar del Rio Region & Vinales. Take the “tobacco route” to the western part of the island, where the best tobacco-growing ground is found and the imposing limestone towers (Mogotes) can be found. Enjoy a panoramic tour through the Vinales Valley, where time seems to stand still. Tour options for today include visits to the Vinales Valley, rum factory, cigar factory and the Indian caves.

Day 4: From Havana to Trinidad

This morning depart Havana for a full day journey to Trinidad via Cienfuegos, which is characterised by its French colonial architecture. Walk over the main square Parque Marti with the nostalgic Terry Theatre, where Caruso used to sing. In the afternoon, continue along the panoramic coastal road to Trinidad, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site with one of a kind colonial architecture.

Afterwards, you will be transferred to your next hotel, Iberostar Grand Hotel Trinidad. The hotel is a colonial treasure that transport guests back to the 16th century with its local architectural touches, carefully decorated spaces, and modern accents that impart comfort and create a fascinating atmosphere.

Day 6: Sugar Mills Tour

Enjoy a private tour to the Sugar Mills outside of Trinidad. An antique train, led by a modern locomotive, rumbles out into the Agabama valley, better known as the UNESCO-protected Valley of the Sugar Mills. The train pulls up at Hacienda Iznaga and its slave-watching tower which, today, offers outstanding views of the undulating hills. After lunch in the old plantation hacienda, explore the beautiful hidden ruins of the once-glorious saccharine revolution. The interior of the Hacienda Guáimaro features the exotic faded frescoes of Italian artist Daniele Dal’Aglio, while the graceful remains of the San Isidro de los Destiladeros mill are romantically framed by the boughs of a huge flame tree.

Day 7: From Trinidad to Havana

On the way back to Havana, stop in Santa Clara, the site of the last battle in the Cuban Revolution in late 1958. In Santa Clara’s center, Parque Vidal is probably one of the most typical places in Cuba. During the afternoons, people (especially singles) visit the park to meet others. Santa Clara is home to a mausoleum which houses the remains of Che Guevara and sixteen of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 during the Bolivia campaign. There is also a reconstruction of Guevara derailing the train during the Battle of Santa Clara. This tour will take the whole day.
