For road trip ideas these trips are hard to beat

Games of Thrones fans will love to take driving Iceland’s Ring Road that lets you circumnavigate the country. Around every corner you’ll spy toasty hot springs, fairy-tale waterfalls and cuddly Icelandic ponies. Along the way you can take in Thingvellir National Park, Gulfoss Waterfall and the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. Added perks include being able to see the Northern Lights and whales making a splash offshore.

For the ultimate American road trip, head down to the Pacific Coast Highway. With this 13-day holiday you can enjoy nature, culture and a little adventure. Land in San Francisco and start with a trip to Alcatraz, then head to Napa Valley for your gourmet fix, before you spend the night glamping in Yosemite National Park. Then clock up the miles cruising down the Big Sur coastline and spy whales and seals en route. Even with all the photo ops, you should still be able to arrive in Los Angeles and squeeze in a bike ride along Malibu beach before you fly home.

Who is ready to see some hobbits? Touch down in Auckland and put Rotorua in your driving route planner and a scenic drive to Matamata where you can visit Hobbiton. Lord Of The Rings addicts will be thrilled to take a two-hour tour of Bilbo Baggins’ home. From here you can drive to a sheep auction to feed some baby lambs and stop by the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, before you head onto Napier to spy a bird forest then Wellington, which is filled with gourmet restaurants. Further adventures can be had if you take a flight to the adventure capital of the world - Queenstown and enjoy a trip to Milford Sound.

Looking for a little family bonding? Then how about a seven-day desert adventure through Australia’s Red Centre? Drive from Alice Springs to Uluru, and spy aboriginal art, emus and kangaroos. And if you need to stretch your legs between driving, you can take a hot air balloon ride over the desert, enjoy a swim in Ellery Creek Big Hole – a spectacular Outback waterhole, hike along the Kings Canyon Rim Walk and even a Segway ride around the base of Uluru.

Touch down in Zagreb then drive through the picturesque heritage villages to the UNESCO city of Dubrovnik on the coast. Drive through the Krka National Park that comes complete with waterfalls where you can take a dip, then head onto the historic town of Spit for a trek up to the peak for a bird’s eye view of the city. Then enjoy a drive along the coast to the picturesque city of Dubrovnik. Mum and dad will love Dubrovnik for the Michelin-starred food and the kids will love it for its Games of Thrones locations.
