Our pick of the best experiences in Kazakhstan

The world’s largest landlocked country and wealthiest of the Stans, Kazakhstan’s landscapes and cities are just waiting to be explored by the intrepid traveller.

To the East discover dramatic mountain scenery, turquoise lakes and the singing sand dunes of Altyn Emel National Park. The old capital Almaty remains the country’s major commercial and cultural hub, its rich history reflected in its eclectic buildings and monuments.

In the North experience the iconic expanses of the Kazakh steppes where the lucky may spot the critically endangered and endearingly bizarre looking Saiga antelope. Marvel at the skyline of Astana as it appears from nowhere out of the flat and featureless grassland. Possibly one of the quirkiest capitals in the world, the city is filled with grandiose structures and ultramodern high-rises.

A land of contrasts, the Southern Desert is home to both the ancient Silk Road trading posts of Turkestan and the space station at Baikonur where it’s possible to watch a live rocket launch.

Queensland is the second largest and third most populated state in Australia, situated in the northeast of the country.

To the east, Queesland is bordered by the stunning Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands – a collection of 74 beautiful tropical islands that are great destinations for a boating holiday. The luscious Daintree Rain Forest is an ecological haven with breathtaking greenness.

The region also boasts fantastic beaches where you may be able to see wild pigs out for a sunbathe. Queensland’s fantastic climate means more than 300 days of sun a year, making it a great destination for sun worshipers and scuba diving fanatics.

Our pick of the best experiences in Kyrgyzstan

Practically untouched by tourism, over 70% of mountainous Kyrgyzstan sits above 2,000m. The Tien-Shan or ‘Heavenly Mountains’ still have numerous virgin peaks never summited by man; you can also track the elusive snow leopard. Immense ranges give way to expansive steppes dotted with nomadic yurt camps and grazing yak.

To the East lies vast Issyk Kul Lake and Karakol, adventure capital of the country and jumping-off point for trekking, climbing, horse-riding and freeriding. Nearby lie the intriguing petroglyphs of Cholpon-Ata.

Marvel the views from Naryn, a city located at the foot of a picturesque gorge. For a truly unforgettable experience, interact with locals and sleep in a traditional Krygyz yurt by the glass-still shores of Song Kul Lake.

South in Fergana Valley discover the varied 3000-year history of Osh with its mosques and Soviet relics. By contrast, the leafy capital Bishkek is relatively young and has a Bohemian feel with international restaurants, museums and thriving arts scene.
