“Hacienda Zuleta offers a one-stop country estate experience. Affable dogs come to say hello, and female staff members wear traditional dress. Horse riding is one of the main reasons to check in – the hacienda has its own breed of horses known as Zuleteños. Children will especially find plenty to do. Those aged over age five can milk a cow, ride a horse and learn about endangered condors.”
Hacienda Zuleta is a luxury boutique hotel set in delightful gardens on a 4,000-acre working farm. It’s situated on the edge of Zuleta village in the Andean mountains of Northern Ecuador and was once the home of the late president Galo Plaza Lasso.
This 16th-century hacienda has a homely atmosphere and combines historic charm with contemporary comforts. There are just 14 spacious rooms complete bold colours, high-quality linen, wooden floors, a wood-burning stove and views over the garden. Bathrooms feature relaxing tubs and candles. Some suites have a private garden.
Farm produce is at the forefront and every evening spreads of food are laid out by the fireplaces for guests to sample. In addition, there’s a cheese museum on the farm, and in the evening you can sample wine and local cheeses.
There’s plenty to keep you busy from horse riding, mountain biking, horse drawn carriage rides, or an embroidery class in the village.
