The cabins are set away from the main house and reflect the surroundings. With high ceilings, exposed wooden beams and a large canopied bed, the rooms are cosy and luxurious. Neutral, modern decor is the style throughout, yet traditional elements are evident everywhere. The cottages are all different sizes and sleep different numbers with some suitable for families, and all come with beautiful views over the cliffs or gardens.
The lodge is fully equipped with all mod-cons, as well as a 24-metre indoor heated swimming pool, gym, all-weather tennis court and fitness centre. Make the most of these facilities before enjoying a pre-dinner drink and canapes in the lounge or courtyard.
The food at Wharekauhau Country Estate is excellent. Join up with other guests or eat alone in the dining room. There is also a hotel bar which is open all day, and as the owner is involved in the wine trade, rest assured that the wine selection is always excellent.
Spend your days exploring the farm and the coastline, or try horse trekking, archery, mountain biking or clay pigeon shooting. Be sure to make the most of the spa facilities and unwind with a massage or a stint in the indoor pool.
Location & Getting There
Wharekauhau Country Estate, Wellington & Wairapa, New Zealand is nestled among stunning lakeside lawns and the surrounding forested hills of Palliser Bay, a 1.5-hour drive from Wellington International Airport.
The Edwardian-style lodge consists of 15 single-suite guest cottages and two three-suite cottages. Cottage Suites in the Main Lodge have large open lounges, oversised fireplaces, elegant dining rooms, kitchens and private courtyards for croquet or suntanning. The Wharepapa Cottage is the perfect family retreat, comprising of three bedrooms, an open-plan living and dining area and a large front terrace.
Guests will be spoilt for choice when it comes to adventure, exploration and relaxation. Activities include horseriding, archery, ATV quad bikes, surfcasting, Wellington City tours, farming tours, wine tours, coastline visits, hiking and mountain biking.
Children are welcome at Wharekauhau Country Estate. There are complimentary babycots, babysitting services and a kid-friendly menu.
