Volcanoes National Park
Located on the border of eastern Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park forms part of the Virunga Mountains range which spans through Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The park is vast – stretching over three countries in total, although Rwanda offers the most easily accessible entrance. It’s a UNESCO-certified area, and one of the largest preservations for the endangered mountain gorilla. Poaching was a huge endemic until protective measures were set up to keep these stunning animals safe. Fortunately, the government and other non-profit organisations now work to ensure that the park remains free from destructive human influence.
There is endless wonder within the Volcanoes National Park – from the wildlife and gorilla tours to the panoramic views of true African wilderness to rugged trekking to unforgettable starry nights!
As well as mind-boggling biological diversity, the park’s jaw-dropping geography includes Africa’s most powerful and active volcano range. Sitting directly on top of the Albertine Rift of the Great Rift Valley, a collection of eight volcanoes, two of which are active provide a quite astonishing backdrop – complete with occasional flowing lava in the southern most range.Read more...
