It might all seem like something out of a movie, but destinations as dramatically beautiful as Portofino and the Italian Riviera really do exist. Watch colourful boats bob up and down on the sparkling blue bays with a glass of bubbly in your hand, and relax - you're on the Riviera now.
The ‘Riviera’ refers primarily to the short coast stretch in northwestern Italy from the city of Genoa to the peninsula of Portofino. Genoa is a city rich with history (Christopher Columbus was born here), and has the museums, galleries and monuments to prove it. Moving south, the incredible scenery and coastlines of the Riviera are revealed and you’re transported to a slow-paced Mediterranean paradise.
First stop is Portofino, the picturesque fishing town with vibrantly coloured houses lining its rocky shores. Portofino is famous for its fashion boutiques, and offers a very high level of boutique accommodation and gourmet restaurants overlooking the Ligurian Sea.
This is one of the finest places in the Mediterranean to enjoy a little dolce vita with a fine Italian wine and fresh frutti di mare accompanying wonderful harbour views. Portofino also offers the chance to explore rustic fishing villages on the Ligurian coastline and numerous historic landmarks including 16th century castles and ancient churches.
