Great Rift Valley

The Great Rift Valley is a large trough that runs through Kenya from north to south.

The floor is broken by volcanoes, some still active, and the region is home to a series of lakes – Turkana, Baringo, Bogoria, Nakuru, Elementeita, Naivasha and Magadi. These lakes are a key location on the West Asian-East African Flyway, a route followed by huge numbers of birds on their annual migration. The lands around the lakes are home to vast populations of black rhino, Rothchild’s giraffe, greater Kudu, lion, cheetah and wild dogs.
