Florianopolis, on the island of Santa Catarina in Southern Brazil, has become one of the trendier spots in the country thanks to beautiful beaches, lush coastline and some of the finest private villas and resorts. Brazilians love it as do Argentines and plenty of Europeans, many with family in the area after it was colonised by Germans, Italians and Portuguese of course.
Best visited between October and April when at its warmest. Due to its location in the south of the country, there are true seasons with cooler weather from May to September. Whilst these so called winter months are a little cooler, expect sunny days and incredible whale watching south of Santa Catarina.
From May to early November, Southern Right Whales come up from Antarctica all the way to Brazil to breed and nurture their young in the shallow bays around Garopaba and Praia do Rosa. Sightings can never be guaranteed, however this is some of the best whale watching around, you can even see them from many of the beaches.
