Finland is extraordinary. In the far Arctic north the Aura Borealis flickers overhead as the nomadic Sami herd their reindeers against an endlessly white backdrop. In the south, fashionable Helsinkians browse the boutiques of the Design District or attend modern art exhibitions at the Kiasma.
Stretching from south to north is one of Europe’s most compelling landscapes: a vision of pristine nature featuring 179,584 islands, 187,888 lakes – The Land of a Thousand Lakes – 35 lush and green national parks, a rugged Baltic coastline, thick coniferous forests, world-class ski trails and Ice-Age glaciers. Finland is an outdoor paradise and one of Northern Europe’s most impressive wildernesses.
The time of the year that visit makes all the difference to your experience. In the north, The Midnight Sun burns 24/7 imbuing the mountainous terrain with a surreal glow. From October to May you can hit the slopes or traverse picturesque cross-country trails; in the southern summer head to the immaculate coast. As the Northern Lights is a naturally occurring phenomenon, it’s tricky to predict the best time to visit, but generally we advise between January and March.
