Darjeeling

Overview

Seemingly frozen in time, the quintessentially colonial hill station of Darjeeling sits in one of India’s loveliest and picturesque settings. Immense Himalayan peaks loom in the background, emerald tea plantations stretch as far as the eye can see; colonial estates and Buddhist monasteries dot the landscapes. Elusive snow leopards prowl in the night.

Originally a tiny outpost on the Himalayan foothills, it was established under British as a cool retreat to escape the relentless summer heat. Today, wonderfully preserved architecture, railway and winding narrow roads all add to its old-world charm.

There is much to admire about the beauty of Darjeeling, but also plenty to do – just be sure to pack hiking boots! We recommend Tiger Hill for glorious sunrises above the iconic Everest skyline.

For more of a full-fledged expedition, the Khangchendzonga Trek sets off from Darjeeling to cover the surrounding mountain terrain – and is truly jaw-dropping! Although, simply exploring the local tea plantations is one of our favourite things to do here!

You couldn’t visit Darjeeling without riding the ornate railroad cars that snake their way up and through the hills. There are museums, temples and a zoo with rare red pandas, to visit too.
