The Amalfi Coast has a long-standing reputation as one of the most luxurious retreats in the Mediterranean; it’s also easily among the most beautiful. It stretches for 50km along the Sorrentine Peninsula: a breathtaking vista of near-vertical limestone cliffs, framed between the vivid shades of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lush countryside of Campania.
The town of Amalfi itself is charming, both historic and stylish in a way that only this corner of the Mediterranean can be. As you wander its sunny piazzas and cobbled streets, it’s hard to imagine that this was once one of the greatest Italian maritime republics. Today, Amalfi is a beautiful setting for a luxury holiday. Especially the sumptuous cliff-side restaurants where you can sip Limoncello or sample the delights of Campanian cuisine as you look over blue the blue-green expanses of the sea.
The very chic Positano is the embodiment of the Amalfi Coast. A luxury retreat that has played host to Frank Sinatra and Bridgette Bardot, it is famed for its enviable style and exclusivity. Yet, it’s the sheer beauty of Positano that stands out. One of the world’s most photogenic towns, a jumble of pastoral-coloured houses cling precariously to a craggy cliff, overlooking a small picturesque beach. In between, lie an intertwining maze of steep, narrow streets, plazas and little chapels.
There are designer clothing stores in abundance – it’s at forefront of Italy’s fashion scene – plus sumptuous boutique hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants such as La Sponda. The gorgeous sandy cove of La Sponda is just a short drive along the coast. For a luxury honeymoon or romantic escape, few places will come even close to Positano.
Although the Neapolitan Riviera is characterised by its rugged coastline of steep cliffs, idyllic Capri – an island just off the tip of the peninsula – is the exception to the rule. A golden ring of fine silky sands encircles its ten square kilometres. Its interior comprises of undulating mountain terrain clad in forest. Capri is a renowned stop on the luxury yacht scene, and Italian brands like Gucci and Prada offer a wealth of glamorous shopping opportunities.
