Kids don’t need to walk around a dusty museum to get a cultural fix. They can plant rice in Laos, get arty in Bali or they can feel like mini explorers and go and explore ancient temples

If you’re concerned that your kids might start thinking that all food comes shrink-wrapped, take them on a rice padi planting tour in Laos. Here they can squelch around in the mud, plant rice, pick vegetables and also make friends with a buffalo or two.

Stay: At the Amantaka in Luang Prabang. This luxury hotel that’s set in a former French colonial building doesn’t forget about the smaller guests. In fact, the chef will even create a bespoke menu just for your tot.

Mini Lara Crofts and Indiana Jones will want to take a trip to Borobudur in Indonesia. The best time to visit is at sunrise (let’s face it, the kids will already be up).  You can climb to the top of the temple as the sun climbs into the sky and lights up the ancient building.

Stay: Plataran Borobudur. Parents will love it as it’s just a five-minute drive from the temple. Kids will love it because it comes with a children’s play area and a mini zoo!

Bali has long been famed as the centre of arts and crafts. Now your tot can brush up on their skills at the Bali Center for Artistic Creativity, which offers charcoal, watercolour and oil painting workshops as well as the chance to create their own bespoke tees.

Stay: The Four Seasons Bali at Sayan is hard to beat. Not only is its kids’ club set in a treehouse in the jungle, it offers endless art activities, including cultural dancing and monster painting.

If your kids find it hard to sit still, give them the chance to burn off some calories with a paddleboarding session across the quiet Piuray Lake to visit a traditional village on the shoreline. They will welcome you with a hot drink and tell your tots about their culture and lifestyle.

Stay: Book a family bungalow at Hotel Sol & Luna. This chic Relais & Chateaux hotel looks like any glamorous hotel, but what makes it extra special is that it was founded to help support a local school.
