Johannesburg, South Africa
An exclusive sanctuary in the upmarket residential Johannesburg neighbourhood of Sandhurst, the Saxon Boutique Hotel, also comprising Villas and Spa, is a former private mansion, and member of the network of Leading Hotels of the World.
Known today for its sheer luxury, its award-winning spa and elegant gourmet restaurant, The Saxon styles itself as an oasis amid the urban sprawl of Johannesburg; indeed Nelson Mandela retreated here to complete his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. The hotel sits in ten acres of lush landscaped gardens with a huge infinity pool, meaning that the city fades away the minute you enter the estate.
In the main house are 20 Egoli Suites, three presidential suites and the lavish two-bedroom Nelson Mandela Platinum Suite. Meanwhile, in the villas, 21 Villa Egoli Suites have private decks leading into the gardens, and the eight Villa Presidential Suites can be converted to create four two-bedroom Villa Platinum Suites.
The bedrooms and the public areas are filled with sculptures, paintings and artefacts from all around Africa, and The Saxon prides itself on its vast collection of art.
The Saxon’s signature restaurant; Five Hundred, is renowned across Johannesburg and beyond for its superb innovative cuisine and wine cellar. The hotel also has a brasserie-style restaurant, and is famous for its extravagant High Tea.
The Saxon Spa and Studio occupies two floors and has its own sundeck, café and a wide range of therapies, pampering experiences and wellness treatments.
This is the ultimate urban retreat in which to indulge yourself en route to or from a safari in the Madikwe & The Waterberg or Sabi Sand regions, or perhaps if you are choosing to spend a night or two in Johannesburg before or after an international flight.
