The Dutch House

Galle Fort

High on a hill, The Dutch House has magnificent views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort.

The Dutch House is the ultimate blend of space and privacy in one of Ceylon’s most well-preserved historic mansions. This retreat is perfect for those looking for lazy days spent lounging by the pool with trips to the Fort for a spot of shopping or lunch.

Highly exclusive with just four suites, this country house built in 1712 ensures complete privacy for its guests. Each bedroom is fully air-conditioned with a mosquito net draped over the four-poster beds and period Dutch antiques reflect the property's early 18th century origins but blend in well with its contemporary collection of art. The bedrooms lead into a private sitting room with comfortable sofas and writing desks.

The food at The Dutch House is fantastic and the chef offers an array of delicious traditional Sri Lankan dishes as well as English breakfasts and other international favorites. Relax in Dick's Bar beforehand for a drink, then dive into a delicious dinner.

Why we recommend The Dutch House

The Dutch House is one of the oldest boutique hotels at the doorstep of the 16th century Galle Forin Sri Lanka.  An all-suite historic mansion, it was built originally for a Dutch Admiral.  I like the fact that even though the present owners have incorporated some modern conveniences, they’ve carefully restored the original features like shuttered glassless windows, standing lamps, heavy drapes and old-fashioned showers.
