Shangri-La is the fabled land at the heart of a sacred region featuring three rivers, the Yangtze, the Mekong and the Salween – a setting that will take your breath away. At 3,300m above sea level, the exclusive Songtsam Retreat immerses travellers in genuine Tibetan hospitality, peace and luxurious well-being.
Songtsam Retreat at Shangri-La is comprised of 75 suites, rooms, and a villa, housed in stone buildings facing the wonderful Songzanlin Monastery. The large Tibetan-styled rooms are rustic and very cosy with traditional paintings, furniture and dark, wooden floors. Beds are very comfortable and each room features a wood-burning stove that add that extra bit of warmth and atmosphere on colder winter days. (We liked the fireplaces so much we used them in the summer as well!). There are beautiful curtains hanging over each doorway, and suites are locked from the inside the traditional Tibetan way by securing a wooden beam over both doors.
The Retreat features both a Western and Tibetan restaurant with enclosed terrace seating in both that overlooks the monastery. There is also an upstairs bar and library that are perfect spots to curl up with a good book and a glass of locally produced Shangri-La wine. The spa offers a range of treatments including body scrubs, facials and massages, and there is even a yoga room for daily yoga and meditation sessions.
The neighbouring village is made up of approximately 75 families, with communal livestock that graze in the fields surrounding the Retreat. Most of the time, the only sound that can be heard is the clanging of cowbells as the animals roam – a truly calming sound that those living in cities won’t be used to!
