Blending laid back beach-house with luxury, Shutters on the Beach takes the craft of living well – and stylishly – seriously. Michael S. Smith, the Obama White House interior designer, oversaw the aesthetics and made it an oasis of Californian elegance and calm.
Guest rooms have hardwood floors, cashmere throws, built-in entertainment centres and shelves stocked with thoughtfully chosen books. Continuing the luxurious and homely feel throughout, art works by Hockney, Lichtenstein and Motherwell adorn the walls and old leather sofas fill the lounge areas that are whitewashed in soothing sand and sea colours.
There are two restaurants: One Pico, overlooking the sea, offers locally sourced fish and spit-roasted meats; coast is the inviting oceanfront cafe offering fresh California dishes; The Lobby Lounge also serves light snacks and cocktails.
Outside, the beach is on your doorstep and there’s also an outdoor heated pool overlooking the ocean with sun loungers and cabanas, a fitness centre, bicycle rentals, surfing lessons, and yoga sessions can be arranged on the sand. And in line with the horizontal vibe is the ONE Spa, which has a range of treatments available to provide a pampering session to remember.
