Masai Mara, Kenya
Offbeat Safaris is one of Africa’s top mobile riding safari companies. Offbeat’s thirty years experience of organising riding safaris throughout Kenya, gives them an unparalleled knowledge and expertise in this field. They understand the passion that guests have for riding and aim to provide a service which is exhilarating, comfortable and most importantly, safe and fun.
The horses are well schooled thoroughbred and thoroughbred cross, with many of them home bred. All of them are responsive, tough and fit. Many are trained for polo and the best ones are handpicked for each guest on their riding safari. Over the duration of a full riding safari guests become highly attached to their own personal mounts. One of the key factors of any safari in Africa, but in particular a riding safari, is your guide. Offbeat has built its excellent reputation by providing guides who are top horsemen, passionate about Kenya’s wildlife and great hosts.
Most of the rides alongside the Masai Mara and through the northern ranches are on fairly open plains where you find black cotton soil interspersed with acacia bush. Many areas have short grass plains ideal for riding. Good riding ability is important and guests should be comfortable at all paces, be able to gallop and react quickly and safely as you will ride in areas where big game wildlife is abundant. Guests need to be fit enough to ride between 4 and 6 hours a day.
Delicious picnic lunches are carried in saddle bags on days that the camp is moved and lunch is usually taken under the shade of a tree with a siesta to follow. Evenings are spent around the camp fire, sharing stories and sampling delicious home cooked food, before making your way to your tent to fall asleep with the sounds of the wilderness surrounding you.
