Sumba Island, Indonesia

This small and exclusive beach hideaway, located on one of the most isolated islands in Indonesia delivers the ultimate unique holiday experience for those in the know. Nihiwatu has an unrivalled reputation, with world class fishing, surfing, diving and offers utter privacy and exclusivity.

The lodge is surrounded by 483 acres of unspoilt tropical forest, rice terraces and grasslands, wrapped around the stunning two and half kilometre long Nihiwatu Beach. The beach is protected on both ends by cliffs and headlands ensuring total exclusivity for guests – rare to find which makes Nihwatu that extra bit special. Tucked between the trees of this remote island are the 12 luxury suites within 3 estates which make up this idyllic beach retreat. With their thatched roofs, the suites and villas are hand built by Indonesian craftsmen using local materials and complete with balcony vistas stretching the full length of the beach and sea.

Nihiwatu have a wonderful yoga pavilion, located in the back of the property amongst the rainforest. This is true jungle style escapism with the fans overhead keeping you cool during your downward dogs.

Do everything or do nothing on this island, that is what makes Nihiwatu such a firm favourite. They have managed to achieve that wonderful balance of having so many exciting and adventurous activities on offer as well as retaining an intently sought after relaxed ambience. Activities are endless on this pristine island,  from surfing one of Indonesia’s top waves (Nihiwatu is committed to a ten surfer quota ensuring that you have the ultimate surfing experience), partaking in some of the world’s best sport fishing, stand up paddleboarding through remote villages, second-to-none diving excursions and fascinating cultural experiences to learn more about the megalithic culture of the area which has remained intact and virtually unchanged through time.

Nihiwatu has set up The Sumba Foundation which is of utmost importance to the lodge, if you are interested it is a wonderful experience to observe the remarkable work being done by this foundation and visit some of the clinics, schools and farms. Your guide will explain how the projects work and you will get to meet some of the thousands of people benefitting.

For an island so remote you would be forgiven in thinking that the food will be quite basic, however you will become used to the daily sumptuous feasts of freshly caught fish, homegrown salads and vegetables and delicious exotic fruits. Once a week enjoy the cooking classes at the beach kitchen with Chef Dicky. This is a special opportunity to learn the tricks of Asian cooking in an incredible setting.

Lightfoot Travel provides tailor-made itineraries that include daily tours and excursions, restaurant recommendations and bookings, and can incorporate Sumba Island into a greater Indonesian holiday. Take a look at Sun, Sea and Sumba as an example of a bespoke itinerary that we can create for you.

Nihiwatu Testimonials

Hi Shyra,

Thank you for introducing us to a truly wonderful place! From the moment that we touched down on Sumba we knew that we were on an adventure and Nihiwatu surpassed our expectations. As you know it was a very special holiday for us and we have travelled extensively in Asia so it was fabulous to find such a unique hotel, in fact to call it a hotel is too limiting, it is is a unique experience. The staff were amazing, particularly Christian, Ka’ala and Kristopher. George the hotel manager was welcoming, attentive and thoroughly professional. Our rooms were drop dead gorgeous, I could have sat all week and just looked at the view!! The natural beauty is amongst the best that we have seen, Ken said the diving was excellent and they all loved surfing. Learning about the work of the Sumba Foundation added an extra dimension to our trip, we visited a school, a clinic and a village and were made most welcome. We left a couple of comments with the hotel but really it would be tricky to find fault, I hope that they manage to keep the magic as they grow. Do get to see it if you can, it is difficult to capture the essence of the place until you see it in person.

All in all you really sorted us out and we are thrilled with your service, we would definitely use you again and George told us to tell you to visit…go!!!

With thanks and very best wishes,

FM – April 2013
