Built in the twenties, entirely renovated in the nineties, and given a total makeover by hotel architecture and design supremo India Mahdavi in 2009, the Monte-Carlo Beach still maintains the spirit of the heyday of the Riviera, in spite of its contemporary facelift.
Hidden away in a sheltered bay between Cap Martin and Monaco, the Monte-Carlo Beach is surrounded by cypress trees, and faces the glittering Mediterranean.
A Relais & Chateaux property, it feels more like a grand villa by the sea than a hotel, and has just 40 rooms. Those on the ground floor have access to the pool and the beach, while those on the floors above have terraces.
The most recent Mahdavi makeover has a noticeably nautical feel, with maritime touches such as portholes in the bedrooms and blue and white décor in the restaurant. Of course this is only appropriate in a hotel which revolves around its beach club.
As its name suggests, the hotel has a private beach, with a variety of beach side accommodation to choose from – cabins, tents or bungalows – a huge array of water sports on offer, and a beachside restaurant.
The Olympic-sized swimming pool at the Monte-Carlo Beach is filled with heated saltwater and has a poolside terrace, sun loungers and restaurant; Le Deck, serving informal lunches.
Elsa is the Monte-Carlo Beach’s gourmet restaurant, with spectacular views from its terrace, and influences from neighbouring Italy and France apparent in its dishes. La Vigie is perched above the sea and serves grills, seafood and buffets for lunch and dinner. By night, the Sea Lounge Monte-Carlo, overhanging the sea, is the place to go for live music from two resident DJs, and champagne, caviar, and cocktails.
The Monte-Carlo Beach operates a children’s club (3 to 8 years) in the months of July and August, with daily activity workshops, a playground and lifeguard-accompanied trips to the children’s pool at the beach.
