Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Kruger National Park

This private game reserve in the heart of the Sabi Sand region has been family-run since 1926, and it is now the fourth generation of the Varty Family who welcome you to their reserve and the five lodges upon it.

Varty is the original camp, named after the owners, and providing the most homely and family-friendly feel. All ten chalets have their own private pools, and Varty is home to facilities including the library and massage room, which guests from all camps can use.

Founders Camp has seven chalets along the banks of the Sand River, and, along with Varty, is among the most child-friendly of the five Londolizi lodges.

The three Private Granite Suites can be booked individually or collectively to provide a private camp for six guests.  Each suite has a private, heated swimming pool. Similarly elegant, Tree Camp is another very ‘grown-up’ lodge, with six suites and private pools.

Pioneer Camp was only completed in 2010, and with just three suites set among ebony trees, it is the most private and therefore ideal for honeymoons. Alternatively, it can be taken over in its entirety for a private group of six to 14 people.

Conservation is key at Londolozi, whose name derives from a Zulu word meaning ‘to protect’, and the Varty family’s stated aim is to provide a sanctuary for all living things. Indeed, Nelson Mandela, a visitor to Londolizi, is quoted as saying that it “represents a model of the dream I cherish for the future of nature preservation in our country.”

Londolozi was the world’s first game reserve to be given Relais & Châteaux status.
