Kulala Wilderness Reserve
Little Kulala is a stylish and intimate setting, in the heart of the private Kulala reserve, closest to the formidable beauty of the dunes. All of the 11 units blend seamlessly into the timeless desert landscape, each with a private plunge pool and rooftop ‘skybed’ for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers.
The interiors have been designed to reflect the colours of the beautiful surrounds – pure linens, cottons and mohair dyed with natural vegetable dyes, combined with the extensive use of neutral colours and the abundance of natural light. The organic feel of the camp translates to the starbeds which are accessed by an external staircase leading to the flat rooftop where you can even arrange to bed down for the night up there.
Between game drives and trips to the Sossuvlei dunes, unwind at the equally chic entertainment area which includes a swimming pool, library, craft boutique, main lounge and dining area, as well as a wine cellar.
Sossusvlei translates into ‘the gathering place of water’ in the local Nama language, and, odd as it may seem, in good years seasonal rains in the foothills of the Naukluft and Tsaris Mountains succeed in reaching the vleis. This creates temporary lakes that mirror the sand dunes surrounding them and Little Kulala offers guests the unique opportunity to experience this miraculous transformation. The vleis have evocative names such as Hidden Vlei and Dead Vlei, while the dunes rise up to 300 metres above the valley floor with razor-sharp edges that stand out against the blue sky.
From Little Kulala, the usual desert-adapted wildlife can be seen including larger predators such as the spotted hyena and the occasional brown hyena, a mystical shaggy-coated scavenger. Nocturnal explorations can reveal dancing white lady spiders and perhaps Grant’s golden mole, a Namib Desert endemic.
