Many would say that when in Rome, you ought to stay at the Hotel de Russie. This is certainly true if you value the tranquillity of extensive gardens, yet covet a central location between the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo.

Many of Rome’s key attractions are within easy walking distance of the Hotel de Russie, including the Borghese gardens and gallery, the Trevi Fountain, Via Condotti, and The Vatican City, whose Sistine Chapel is just ten minutes away on foot.

The ‘secret’ oasis at the back of the Hotel de Russie date from the 18th century and the hotel is so called because many of its residents in the 19th century were escaping cold Russian winters.

Poet Jean Cocteau was reportedly so taken with the hotel’s terraced gardens that he wrote to his mother that the De Russie was “paradise on Earth”.

The Hotel de Russie has 122 rooms, including 33 suites, four of which have their own private terraces. Many rooms have views either of the hotel’s gardens or the Piazza del Popolo. If yours looks out onto neighbouring rooftops, bearing in mind that this is Rome, it’s still a captivating view.

The classic Italian menu in the hotel’s restaurant, the Jardin de Russie, is extremely popular with locals as well as hotel guests, particularly in the summer when its tables are dotted around the garden, as well as on the terrace.

Residents of Rome and visitors alike also fill the Stravinskij Bar of the Hotel de Russie for lunch, afternoon tea or cocktails, either inside or at tables spilling out onto Piazzetta Valadier.

The De Russie Wellness Zone has a marine hydropool, steam rooms, and six spa treatment rooms.
