Neuquen, Argentina

Estancia Huechahue is a family owned cattle ranch nestled in the hills of the remote northern Lake District of Argentina. Just two hours’ drive north of Bariloche along Route 40, one of South America’s great highways, it is set within a beautiful area of rolling grasslands, craggy outcrops, huge volcanoes and world-class fly fishing rivers.

Whilst the estancia is known as a horse riding destination, it is a comfortable one after the eight comfortable rooms were recently renovated. Spread across three standalone chalets they are all ensuite and have outdoor decks to relax with a glass of wine after a day in the saddle or in the water fly-fishing perhaps. Service is warm and incredibly welcoming with very much a fell feel to the whole place. The tasty food is based on traditional Argentina dishes and almost all of the produce comes from the farm as they rear their own beef, hunt local venison and wild boar, make their own cheese and grow many of their own fruit and vegetables.

There is so much to do here. The horse riding is superb, you may wish to spend the day with the gauchos rounding up some of the 900 head of Hereford cattle or up into the hills to observe condors and take in the views of magnificent snow-capped Lanin Volcano. The horse riding is led by the brilliant Jane Williams, renowned for offering epic pack trips through the Andes and even from Chile’s Pacific Coast of Chile to Argentina’s Atlantic Coast. Don’t worry, there is plenty for the non- riders! The trout fly-fishing is excellent thanks to private access to pristine rivers where few others ever fish; rafting, hiking, biking and bird watching to name a few can all be organised.
