Set among the countryside of the Luberon region of Provence, France, so famous for its lavender fields, Domaine des Andéols is an unexpectedly contemporary design hotel with just twenty rooms housed in ten separate buildings.
Looking every inch the traditional Provençal hamlet, this cluster of classic stone houses contains the exceptional private art collection of the owners, alongside furnishings by Philippe Starck and photography by David Bailey.
Sculptures are dotted around the Domaine des Andéols’ extensive grounds, blending in amongst the gnarled olive trees and the iconic mauve carpet which appears from June to August.
The villas at Domaine des Andéols have one, two and three bedrooms, and each is entirely different in style and character, inspired by its own artistic movement or theme and with its own accompanying soundtrack on the iPod.
The smallest; Maison des Amoureux, is a futuristic one-bedroom love nest with concrete walls and vivid red furniture, while Maison du Voyageur has an exotic ethnic African vibe, two bedrooms and a private pool. The largest; Maison des Cascades, is light and minimalist, with three bedrooms and private garden and pool.
Domaine des Andéols has an outdoor swimming pool with beautiful garden and hillside views, as well as a tennis court. Indoors, the spa has a small heated plunge pool, Turkish hammam and Jacuzzi.
Selecting where to eat while at Domaine des Andéols is made easy, as your options are simply the ‘Indoor Restaurant’ (La Maison des Saveurs), outside ‘Under the Plane Tree’, or 7 metres above the ground in the Treetop Dining Room. Wherever you are, you’re likely to enjoy tomatoes, beans, apricots, olives and figs from the grounds, local Luberon lamb, and herbs grown around the region too.
