Luang Prabang, Laos
Azerai is an elegant new hotel located in the heart of the tiny and ancient town of Luang Prabang, Laos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Crowned by verdant mountains and housing over 30 vats (temples), former royal palaces, and scenic ponds, Luang Prabang is considered by many, the cultural jewel of the country, and an ideal setting for urbane travellers seeking adventure in the far east.
Azerai is the latest offering from Adrian Zecha, the hotelier who founded ultra-luxury resort group Aman. His vision for this esteemed property is a new brand of hotels that offers guests simple elegance, refined design, discreet and attentive service in places of unique beauty and cultural interest. In short, Azerai is the smart choice for today’s cultured guests.
The site, which first opened in 1914, has a rich history, having served as quarters for French officers, a home for the Laos government, and as the city’s finest hotel. In 2015 it underwent a complete renovation and reopened as Azerai, a contemporary interpretation of Asian hospitality.
53 open plan rooms surround a 25-metre courtyard pool, shaded by a 120-year old banyan tree. The elegant guest rooms range in size from 35 to 85 square metres, many featuring a private terrace or courtyard. Design is anchored by clean lines, warm wood, and neutral palettes.

Luang Prabang, is one of the lesser known but beautifully preserved living heritage sites in the world; all the better for the traveller seeking adventures off the beaten path.
The peninsula town is located in the north of Laos, at the joining of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers. A spiritual township and a former capital of Laos, it is recognized as a cultural and religious centre for Theravada Buddhism. In fact there are over 30 active temples scattered throughout and groups of saffron-robed monks and novices from age eight to 80 are a common sight at any time of day. Wander the streets among them, marvelling at the unique fusion of traditional architecture and urban structures influenced by 19th and 20th century European colonial settlers. Visit the Royal Palace Museum, riverside cafés, or colourful local markets with an eclectic mix of hand-crafted textiles, home wares and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. And don’t miss the town’s “crowning glory”, the 100 metre Mount Phousi (Sacred Mountain) topped by a 24 metre gilded stupa, offering panoramic views of Luang Prabang and the surrounding mountains.
Azerai welcomes families and young guests. Children have room to play in the enclosed Pavilion area, and babysitting services can be arranged.
