Batu Batu Information
- Location & Getting There:
Batu Batu is located on the private island of Pulau Tengah, 16 kilometres off the east coast of peninsula Malaysia in the South China Sea. The island is accessible by private speedboat from the coastal town of Mersing – the journey is approximately 20 minutes. Senai International Airport is located 135 kilometres from Mersing, while Singapore Changi International Airport is a 160 kilometre trip.
Accommodation at Batu Batu has been lovingly crafted by local Malay carpenters, inspired by centuries-old design. 20 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom villas are set into the island’s wild environment with views of the jungle, beach, and sea. Designs range from jungle villas, set on higher ground in the island’s tropical forest, to beach villas, set directly on the island's Sunrise Beach. Many of the villas offer an optional children’s annexe, outfitted with bunk beds, making the perfect abode for a family stay.
All villas include thoughtful in-room design and amenities such as a DVD player, iPod speakers, romantic mosquito netting, and high-pitched roofs. Enormous standalone tubs take centre stage in the spacious bathrooms, and combined with the rain showers and Malin + Goetz toiletries, invite you to relax and unwind.
2 recreational boats
Dive centre - Opens from March to November with dive courses and fun dives for adults and children
Your first thought when visiting a private island might be all beach, all the time, and while the eight white powder sand beaches of Pulau Tengah are certainly tempting, there are a variety of other activities to experience at Batu Batu. Do the ‘jetty jump’, an exhilarating jump off the end of the jetty during high tide into the turquoise blue sea. Take out one of the island’s two recreational boats to explore the archipelago. Snorkel, kayak, or scuba dive. Or remain on land for excursions to trek through the island’s jungle or patrol the beaches in the early morning searching for signs of nesting turtles
If you’d like to tame your own inner beast, book a session at the onsite spa, then wander over to the bar for a Batu Batu Delight, a signature cocktail that will leave you feeling footloose and fancy free as the night unfolds.
Batu Batu welcomes families with children. Little ones will love the array of activities and the kids’ menu that changes daily. Batu Batu has a Turtle Watch Camp, Turtle hatchery and a Conservation Centre. Kids will learn about the effects of rubbish on marine life as well as getting a chance to observe turtles in their natural habitat. Guests can also adopt a nest and, if they are lucky, get involved in digging up the eggs to transfer to the hatchery, turtle patrols or even releasing hatchlings into the sea.
