Sri Lanka’s Untouched North

This five-day itinerary takes you off the beaten track and into the unchartered territories of Jaffna, located in the North of Sri Lanka.

This region, regularly invaded by South Indian rulers, Portuguese, Dutch and British boasts diverse architecture as well as a rich religious heritage where Hindu and Buddhists live in peace and harmony.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival into Colombo, where you will be transferred to your accommodation, The Wallawwa. In the evening, enjoy a guided Old Colombo Walkabout, marvel at the country’s hidden colonial treasures and take in the history of Sri Lanka.

Day 2: Colombo to Jaffna

Transfer to Ratmalana airport to catch your flight to Jaffna. Accommodation in Jaffna is Fort Hammenheil, a resort located off the mainland.

Upon arrival, visit Point Pedro, the North most point of Sri Lanka and then check-in into your resort.

Explore the beauty of the Portuguese built fort (formerly a prison) and enjoy the beauty of the island’s colonial architecture.

Lunch will be on the mainland (a one minute boat ride from the hotel). In the afternoon, drive through the city centre to visit the famous Nallur Kovil, one of the most significant Hindu temples in the Jaffna district, built in 948.

In the evening, watch the sun set from the top of the Jaffna Fort.

Day 3: Excursion to Delft Island

Following an early breakfast, board a privately chartered boat to Delft Island, which lies an hour away from Fort Hammenheil.

A Tuk Tuk driver awaits on Delft Island, for your guided tour: Portuguese fortress ruins, wild horses roaming around, Pigeon’s communication nest, Baobab tree, and coral wall are amongst the sites you will enjoy on your tour of the island.

The afternoon is at leisure

Stay: Fort Hammenheil

Day 4: Temple visits

After breakfast, visit the Naguleswaram Kovil, one of the oldest shrines of the region. Bathe in the nearby Keerimalai Springs, which are believed to have healing powers.

In the afternoon, discover Kadurugoda Temple and its 60 stupas, believed to be constructed from the remains of 60 arahath monks who lived in the area.

Next, a tour of Rajamanthri Walauwa former residence of King Sangili’s chief minister.

Day 5: Departure

Depart from Fort Hammenheil onto Colombo for international flight.
