Rwanda Primate Adventure

Africa is renowned for its abundant wildlife and whilst it is possible to see The Big Five in several countries, Rwanda is one in three places where you can observe the imposing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Being a protected species, there are less than 1000 left in the wild and to come across them is a truly unique experience. In addition to tracking mountain gorillas, you will also have the opportunity to relax in one of Africa’s largest lakes, Lake Kivu and explore the capital city, Kigali.

Day 1: Arrival into Kigali

Upon arrival into Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your accommodation.

Known as the ‘land of a thousand hills’, it’s easy to see why Rwanda picked up this nickname: the charming city covers several hills! The rest of the day is at leisure for you to explore the city or rest.

Stay: Serena Hotel Kigali

Day 2: From Kigali to Nyungwe Forest Reserve

In the morning, you will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the Nyungwe Forest Reserve, located southwest of the country, where you will stay for the next 2 nights. The drive offers lovely scenery and the chance to get an insight into day-today Rwandan village life.

Once you arrive, you are free to stroll through the 1,000 sqm of forest, where you will find an impressive array of flora and fauna.

Stay: Nyungwe Forest Lodge

Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking in the Nyungwe Forest

You will spend the morning tracking the exuberant chimp families in the forest. Observing them in their natural habitat, as they swing from branches to branches is a thrilling experience!

Stay: Nyungwe Forest Lodge

Day 4: From Nyungwe Forest to Kigali

Today, you will return to Kigali for a one night stay.

Stay: Serena Hotel Kigali

Day 5: From Kigali to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, you will depart Kigali and make your way to the north-west of the country, to the shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s great lake.

You will be able to relax for the remainder of the day on the excellent beaches that the lake boasts.

Stay: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel

Day 6: From Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

The highlight of your trip starts today, as you depart from Lake Kivu and make your way to the Volcanoes National Park. Home to 300 mountain gorillas, the next 3 days are all about spotting the elusive and impressive creature.

Stay: Virunga Lodge

Day 7: Guided mountain gorilla tracking

One of Africa’s most memorable and exciting experience awaits today, as you trek through Volcanoes National Park in search of the mountain gorillas. Be prepared for some hard work as you trek, particularly if it is wet and muddy; the effort is more than worth it!

You will be back at the hotel in time for lunch and have the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Stay: Virunga Lodge

Day 8: Guided mountain gorilla tracking
