For those who wish to venture beyond Shanghai and Beijing, Chengdu – the capital of Sichuan province – is a fabulous destination. With its beautiful scenery, teahouse culture, temple and Pandas, below is a sample 6-day itinerary of the ways you can spend your time in the ‘Brocade City’.

Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu

Upon arrival in Chengdu you’ll be met at the airport by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

In the afternoon your guide will take you to the People’s Park, a perfect example of the local parks where young and old practice Tai-Chi, Kung-fu, sword dance, meditation, dance and gymnastics.

After refreshments at the House of Tea, you’ll continue to the Wenshu Temple, the best preserved, and still popular Buddhist temple in Chengdu.

Day 2: Chengdu

The day starts with an early visit to the nearby Panda Breeding Centre, home to fewer than 100 pandas, and the largest centre for pandas in captivity in the world.

You’ll spend the afternoon learning the art of Sichuan cooking, one of the eight major strands of cooking in the country. Your private chef will accompany you to a local market to choose ingredients, before returning to the kitchen to prepare hot and spicy Sichuan dishes.

Day 3: Chengdu - Jiuzhaigou

You’ll be met at the hotel and taken to the airport for your flight to Jiuzhaigou.

Upon arrival you’ll be met by your local guide and transported to your hotel.

The rest of the day will be at your leisure.

Day 4: Jiuzhaigou

Spend the day visiting Jiuzhaigou National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Jiuzhaigou is known for its multiple spots of interest such as the stunning lakes which change from turquoise to navy blue to emerald green. You’ll be escorted throughout the trip and have the chance to travel on foot or by bus to see the Shuzheng Lakes, Tiger Lake and Rhinoceros Lake, as well as several small waterfalls.

Other highlights are the Five Colour Pond, which features the most intense colours of the site, the Long Lake with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Nuorilang waterfalls, Pearl Shoal and Five Flower Lake.

Time permitting, you’ll also visit the Primeval Forest, which is dominated by a majestic, 4500-metre-high Ganzigongai – the highest mountain in the park – before you return to your private vehicle and the hotel.

Day 5: Jiuzhaigou - Huanglong

Today we’ll journey to Huanglong National Park, driving through typical Tibetan villages and witnessing magnificent mountain views along the on the way.

The main area of the park is an ascent though a pine forest, passing beautiful turquoise, yellow and emerald green limestone ponds, and stopping at several wooden viewing platforms to take in the scenery.

Your energetic work will be rewarded upon arriving at the fantastical setting of the Yellow Dragon Temple, built during the Ming Dynasty and combining both Buddhist and Taoist idols. You’ll also see the Five Color Lake overlooked by the Xuebao peak. It should take around two hours to reach the summit and the same to travel back down.

We’ll then return to Jiuzhaigou.

Day 6: Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu - Home

You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Chengdu and your connecting flight home.
