Explore the scenery of the Lord of the Rings trilogy from Hobbiton set in the verdant countryside of the Waikato region to the spectacular volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park (home to ‘Mount Doom’) and the pristine scenery of the Queenstown area. Two nights are included in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, which was home to cast members during the filming of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies and also the home of Sir Peter Jackson’s famous Weta studios.
Price includes meet & greet upon arrival, accommodation, private transfers as specified, all excursions are shared except the day hike to Tongariro National Park and LOTR touring in Wellington. Excludes international flights, optional activities and items not mentioned in Inclusions.
Day 1: Arrival into Auckland - Taupo
Upon arrival at Auckland International Airport you will be met by a Lightfoot representative who will hand over your New Zealand documentation and whisk you away on your journey through Middle Earth (approximately 2 hours’ journey).
Your first stop is Matamata, where Hobbiton is located.Set on the most picturesque private farmland, spend a fascinating two hours on the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies. At the conclusion of your tour, enjoy a refreshment at The Green Dragon Inn.
Following your guided excursion continue to Taupo (approximately 2 hours’ journey).

Day 2: Cruise on Lake Taupo
This morning enjoy a scheduled cruise on Lake Taupo – marvel at the Maori rock carvings, cruise around the picturesque bays of the lake and enjoy fabulous views of the spectacular snow-capped mountain peaks of the Tongariro National Park (approximately 90 minutes duration).
The remainder of the day is at leisure to stroll by the lake on your own time, or enjoy the facilities of the hotel.

Day 3: Tongariro Private Guided Day Hike
This morning you will be transferred to the Tongariro Track (approximately 45 minutes). Often described as the best one day walk in New Zealand. The Tongariro Crossing provides an opportunity to experience some of the most scenic volcanically active areas of the park. A picnic lunch has been included today.
Snow-capped volcanoes, crater and alpine lakes, pristine rain forest, sparkling rivers, dramatic waterfalls and astonishing flora and fauna are all found within the Tongariro National Park. Vast tussock and desertscapes abound interspersed with remnants of ancient beech forests making it extraordinary terrain. Mount Nguauruhoe was featured as ‘Mount Doom’ in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which you will have the opportunity to photograph at the summit of Mount Tongariro. Your walk will take approximately 7 hours and you will be transferred back to your accommodation at the end of the day.

Day 4: Rotorua - Wellington
Today you will be met at your accommodation by your private car and driver and transferred to Taupo Airport prior to your onward flight to New Zealand’s compact capital city, Wellington.
Day 5: Day Trip around Wellington
This morning you will be met at your accommodation by your private car and driver for a full day’s sightseeing focussing on the Lord of the Rings.
Peter Jackson, the studios, Park Rd Post Production, Weta Digital and Weta Workshops are all based in Wellington. During filming, cast members lived in Wellington for long periods. They were often seen enjoying coffee at the Chocolate Fish, surfing the Pacific waves at Lyall Bay and shopping in designer stores.
Wellington, it’s where the dream started – let your tour begin driving past, photo or visit the cast’s favourite cafes, restaurants, shops and hang-outs. Visit the Embassy Theatre, location on the Australasian Premiers of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers and the World Premier of the Return of the King. Drive by the studios, Weta Digital, Weta Workshops. Park Rd Post Production and the Wingnut Films office.
The following film locations may be visited during the tour dependent upon time available; Mt Victoria (The Outer Shire and The Race to the Ferry), Seatoun (The Township of Bree), Dry Creek Quarry (Helms Deep), Hutt River (River Andiun), Harcourt Park (Gardens of Isengard and The Orc Tree) and Kaitoke Regional Park (Rivendell and the Fords of Isen).
Following your excursion you will be transferred back to your accommodation.
Day 6: Wellington - Queenstown
This morning you will be met at your accommodation by your private car and driver and transferred to Wellington Airport for your flight to Queenstown.
Day 7: Glenorchy Day Trip
This morning enjoy a leisurely scenic drive by coach following the shores of Lake Wakatipu to the remote town of Glenorchy (approximately 45 minutes’ drive).
Journey by 4WD coach through the back roads to the upper reaches of the scenic Dart River taking you through wilderness so untouched it has been declared a World Heritage Area. Enjoy a jet boat ride on the scenic Dart River taking you through wilderness so untouched it has been declared a World Heritage Area – several scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy were shot in this area. You may also enjoy an optional guided forest walk en route.
(Total excursion time is approximately 5 hours duration inclusive of transfers).
Day 8: Safari of the Rings Tour, Queenstown
This morning you will be met at your accommodation by 4WD for a morning ‘Lord of the Rings’ tour, visiting some of the many locations used for the trilogy. The area provided such spectacular backdrops to much of the action – the Ford of Bruinen. Misty Mountains, Pillars of the Kings and Road to Mordor were filmed in the Queenstown area.
The embodiment of the Middle Earth of Tolkien’s imagination. The ‘Safari of the Rings’ tour is a scenic charter that gives a spectacular look at the diversity of the scenery in the area. It is based around several of the specific sites where filming took place. These are real places; there are no film sets; they are areas of outstanding natural beauty that need no enhancement. Here it is possible to experience the magical atmosphere captured in the film.
Day 9: Queenstown at leisure
While at leisure we suggest a scenic flight to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, located in the unique Fiordland National Park, hot air ballooning over Queenstown, or a visit to Old Cromwell Town to see local artists, historic buildings, and shop for gourmet preserves.
Day 10: Departure
This morning you will be met at your accommodation and transferred to Queenstown Airport prior to your onward flight home.
