Highlights of Morocco: Marrakech, Mountains & The Coast

Start your journey in Marrakech – home of endless maze-like souks and tantalizingly spicy aromas. Be sure to visit some of the famous temples such as the Koutoubia Temple with its three gold domes, and admire the stunning architecture that is evident throughout this city.

Head from the colourful, bustling city of Marrakech to the spectacular Atlas Mountains where you can go mule trekking across mountainous terrain one day and hot air ballooning the next.

From there, make your way to Essaouira, a UNESCO-listed medina bursting with boho-chic charm. Here, you can relax on the beach, explore the fishing harbour and afterwards, try out a traditional Moroccan meal in an upmarket French restaurant.

Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech and Transfer to Riad

Arrive into Marrakech’s International Airport where you will be met and transferred to your accommodation for the next three nights, one of the riads in the Angsana CollectionLocated in the Old Medina, six riads have been carefully restored by artisans to create this luxurious collection.

With opulent interiors, a hammam, pool and traditional restaurant, this is the ideal place to begin your Moroccan tour. Relax and unwind in your hotel before drinks in the Medina this evening.

Day 2: Explore Marrakech

Spend today familiarizing yourself with the hustle and bustle of this colourful, intense city, accompanied for half the day by an experienced guide who will teach you the history and culture of Marrakech. Visit some of the best sights including the Bahia palace and the Dar Si Said Museum, within the Medina.

Day 3: Marrakech Half Day Tour

Visit the Koutoubia Mosque which dominates the Marrakech skyline, followed by a visit to the famous Saadien Tombs containing the elaborate burial grounds of many wealthy sultans. In the afternoon, head to the souks and spend a few hours wandering their maze-like alleyways. Be sure to discover the Dyer’s souk as well as the freshly smelling Carpenter’s souk.

From the souks, head to the Djema El Fna which is now part market, part travelling fair. Expect to see jugglers next to interesting food stalls and snake charmers by the fresh orange juice vendor!

To appreciate it the most, grab a seat on one of the rooftop terraces and spend the evening people watching and soaking it all up.

Day 4: Marrakech - Atlas Mountains

After breakfast you will drive for one hour to the Atlas Mountains and to your next accommodation, Kasbah Tamadot, where you will stay for three nights.

Owned by Richard Branson, this is an enchanting hideaway set at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. With traditional décor and magnificent landscaped gardens, Kasbah Tamadot is the ideal getaway after a few energetic days in buzzing Marrakech.

Day 5: Atlas Mountains

Spend today making the most of the activities on offer from the hotel – sauna, mule-trekking and hot air ballooning to name a few. You can sign up for cooking lessons and learn which Moroccan spices suit which meats, or perhaps you’d rather spend your days alternating between the two hotel pools, tennis court or gym. Be sure to appreciate the stunning views over the surrounding mountainside whist you are there.

Day 6: Atlas Mountain Trek (Optional Extra)

In a 4×4 vehicle, drive about 2 hours to the village of Tassa Ouirgane situated near the Toubkal National Park at an altitude of 1200m. From here, start the hike through forests of oaks and Juniper trees to Azadden valley.

Cross remote Berber villages of Azerfzane and Irkoubline before stopping for a picnic lunch near the river in Tiziane (1600m). Continue the hike to Tahlijouine Village (1850m) where your driver waits to drive you back to the hotel.

Day 7: Atlas Mountains - Essaouira

After breakfast you will be driven for three hours to your next destination – Essaouira. Here you will stay at the L’Heure Bleue Palais. From bustling town to mountain retreat, you will now find yourself in the laidback seaside town of Essaouira.

Complete with stunning interiors and extravagant furnishings, the hotel offers impressive rooftop views across the medina and ocean. L’Heure Bleue offers a wide range of culinary options, from Moroccan feasts to seafood extravaganzas, so be sure to head to their restaurant one night.

Day 8 - 9: Essaouira

Spend your final two days relaxing on the beach, cycling through the city with a guide, or for the more adventurous, try kite-surfing, quad-biking or four-wheel driving. Essaouira itself has a relaxed, boho feel to it, so take time winding down little cobbled streets popping into art galleries, traditional jewelers and artisan stores as you go. Explore the fishing harbor and the crumbling Essaouira citadel in all its beauty.

Day 10: Essaouira - Airport

After breakfast you will transfer to Marrakech International Airport for your flight home.
