For a totally different safari experience, we highly recommend Namibia. The epic landscapes are out of this world and the wildlife viewing opportunities are endless. From the vast dunes of Sossusvlei, travel to desert Rhino camp in search of the desert-adapted rhino, and then onto the Skeleton Coast, one of the harshest environs in the planet. The final leg of your Namibian adventure is Kunene, where a river safari awaits.
Day 1: Arrive into Namibia
On arrival into Hosea Kutako International Airport you will take a Wilderness Air flight to Kulala Wilderness Reserve, which borders the Namib Naukluft National Park, and transfer to your lodge, Little Kulala Lodge in Sossusvlei.
Spend the afternoon relaxing in camp – take a dip in your private plunge pool or enjoy a sundowner on the open deck overlooking the floodlit waterhole. Enjoy an afternoon nature walk or drive out to enjoy a sundowner on the reserve.
Stay: Little Kulala
Day 2: Sossusvlei
With two inclusive guided activities per day at Little Kulala, there is plenty to occupy your time! One of the highlights of your entire itinerary will be tour of the vast dunes of Sossusvlei, including some dune climbing and a walk on the stunning Dead Vlei. You can also visit Sesriem Canyon with your guide and take in nature drives and walks within the stunning Kulala Reserve, where you will see oryx, springbok, ostrich and other desert wildlife.
Stay: Little Kulala
Day 3: Hot air balloon ride and transfer to Desert Rhino Camp
Rise early this morning for a hot air balloon excursion, a unique opportunity which is not to be missed. As you soar silently over the ancient desert you get to see unforgettable and breathtaking 360 degree vistas. Admire the stark beauty of Namibia followed by a champagne breakfast at your landing spot.
Your guide will be waiting to transfer you to the airstrip for your onward flight to Desert Rhino Camp. This flight takes you across the sand sea to the Atlantic Ocean, up along the famed skeleton coast of Namibia. View old diamond prospecting ruins and a shipwreck along the coast
After lunch at the camp head out with your guide on an afternoon game drive. Look out for the desert adapted black-rhino, mountain zebra, giraffe, lion, springbok and leopard to name just a few. In the evening enjoy a dinner under the stars
Stay: Desert Rhino
Day 4: Rhino tracking
This morning you may wish to track rhino, either on foot or in a vehicle, or go on guided nature walk.
After lunch at the camp head out with your guide again on an activity of your choice – you may want to go in search of the black rhino again. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy the stunning scenery that is simply out of this world.
After a sundowner game drive, return to the camp for a delicious dinner and to learn more about the different cultures of Namibia and some of the world’s last free roaming black rhino.
After dark, another realm of the Namib awakes. Walks reveal some of these captivating critters such as dancing white lady spiders and scorpions which shine under UV lights.
Stay: Desert Rhino
Day 5: Hoanib Skeleton Coast
Today take a flight to Hoanib Skeleton Coast, where you will be staying for the next three nights. This luxury safari camp lies amongst the sand dunes overlooking a dry riverbed and waterhole in the Hoanib River Valley, an area with a rich diversity of desert-dwelling wildlife.
This is also the spot where Dr Flip Stander conducts his research from, and the camp has since built a research centre where guests can learn about the conservation of the desert-adapted lions and other species. The region is one of the harshest environments on the planet and protecting the wildlife is crucial.
In the afternoon relax at the camp, hike up a nearby kopje top to enjoy the sun setting over the Hoanib River Valley and simply watch the wildlife go by, or head out on an afternoon desert drive. The area is inhabited by wildlife that has superbly adapted to its environs, and one of the greatest concentrations of desert-adapted elephant can be found here.
Day 6: Game drives
After breakfast head out in your vehicle with your guide to spot the elusive desert-dwelling elephant and perhaps even lion. Your guide will take you to Mudorib Springs which are recognised for the red basalt landscapes and are home to Hartmann’s mountain zebra and the desert-adapted rhino. Or go to the north and eastern Hoanib area which boasts spectacular desert scenery.
After a busy day, cool off in the plunge pool as you enjoy the views and later enjoy a delicious meal under the stars.
Day 7: Desert flying safari
Today head to the Skeleton Coast for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You will be driven to the coast, visiting the Klein Oasis Spring and seal colonies, exploring the coastline, viewing shipwreck remains and driving through the sand dunes in a 4WD. Following a picnic lunch and time exploring the coastline, you will fly back to the camp in a light aircraft (weather permitting), marvelling at the unique landscape as you soar across the desert.
On return to the camp swap stories from the day’s adventure over a bush dinner.
Day 8: Kunene
This morning you will be transferred to the final leg of your Namibian adventure – to Serra Cafema in Kunene, your home for the next three nights.
Relax in the camp – which is situated under large, shady albida trees with uninterrupted views of the Kunene River Valley and desert – and laze by the pool before afternoon tea and a late afternoon activity such as a desert drive or nature walk.
Stay: Serra Cafema
Day 9: Game drives
Activities at Serra Cafema revolve around exploring the surrounding Namib Desert sands and the lush oases along the river. Informative nature drives and carefully guided quad bike excursions through the fragile dunes allow you to experience the true Namib Desert.
Not to be missed is boating on the Kunene River. This gives you the opportunity to venture through the riverside oases with the chance to see crocodiles and water birds.
Stay: Serra Cafema
Day 10: Cultural visit to a Himba settlement
Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight, as is a cultural visit to a Himba settlement – one of the last true nomadic people in Africa.
Stay: Serra Cafema
