Family Winter Adventure in Norway

Norway’s landscapes are nothing short of soul-stirring and mind-blowing. Whilst there are so many wonderful sites to behold, nothing beats the winter when the country is covered in a thick blanket of snow – Winter Wonderland.

During this 12 day holiday you and your family will explore an incredible Scandinavian country, brimming with adventure.

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival at Bergen Airport, you will be met and transferred from the airport to your hotel, Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Bergen. The hotel offers elegant accommodation on the city’s historic wharf of Bryggen, once a key player in the Hanseatic League’s trade empire, retaining a traditional aesthetic of colorful wooden buildings and simplistic architecture.

You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore the abundance of nearby sites or simply relax at the hotel.

Here are just a few suggested activities for your free time:

  • The iconic and UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen. Bryggen is a centre of commerce, with many shops selling souvenirs and luxury goods.
  • Uncover the city’s fascinating past at the Bryggens Museum, where you can find archaeological excavations and the foundations of some of the city’s oldest buildings.
  • Stop by Bergen’s alfresco fish market in the heart of the city, where you can dine on the freshest seafood.
  • Ride the Floibanen funicular railway up to Mount Floyen, with incredible views of the city.
  • Visit the city’s medieval cathedral, which is dedicated to Olav the Holy, Norway’s patron saint.
  • Admire the art at the Kode Museum, which features collections by Evard Munch, Pablo Piccaso and Paul Klee.
  • Make a trip out to the villa of composer Edvard Grieg in Troldhaugen.

Day 2: Norway in a nutshell

This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Bergen Train Station for your self-conducted ‘Norway in a nutshell’ excursion. Once the visit is completed, you will be transferred back to your hotel

This trip takes you through some of Norway’s most beautiful fjord scenery from the scenic Bergen Railway, the breathtaking Flåm Railway, as well as the Aurlandsfjord and the narrow Nærøyfjord on a boat. This excursion will be ended at Bergen Train Station, where your driver will be waiting at the arrival hall to send you back to your hotel.

Day 3: Admiring the Northern Lights

In the morning, you will catch your flight to Tromso, and upon arrival, a Lightfoot Travel representative will escort you to your hotel, Malangen Resort. Located in Balsfjord, Northern Norway, this hotel is a modern, purpose-built resort with an idyllic waterfront location on the picturesque Malangen Peninsula. The property has a unique combination of fjord and mountain scenery and the accommodation ranges from hotel rooms to apartments, sea-view cabin and deluxe sea-view cabin – all offering a high standard of quality and comfort and spectacular views.

So are you are not chilled to the bone whilst waiting for the Northern Lights, the guides at the resort will monitor the skies and will wake you up with a magical Sami song once they spot the elusive light dancing in the sky. Meet your guide at the hotel lobby and quickly set off on a chase the lights. There will be a camp out in the wilderness where you will enjoy warm drinks around a fire while listening to your guide share more about the Aurora Boralis phenomenon.

Day 4: Dog Sledding Tour

Make the most of your morning at leisure to relax at the resort or enjoy a sleep-in.

In the afternoon, you will be met at the lobby for your Dog Sledding Tour  with a group of eager huskies that will take you into the wilderness. Start the adventure with a lesson in how to manage your own husky team, drive in pairs and finish the excursion with a delicious hot meal by an open fire.

Day 5: Snow Shoe Walk

Today’s adventure is a Snow Shoe Walk. Follow in the footsteps of world famous Norwegian explorers and head into the untouched wilderness – the beautiful silence of the snowy forest, the scent of the smoke from the open campfire and maybe even get a glimpse of a willow grouse or a red fox in their daily routines make for a memorable experience.

After lunch, you will be transferred to Tromso where you will check into your next accommodation, Scandic Ishavshotel, boasting a unique location on the quay. You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore nearby sites or simply relax at the hotel.

Day 6: Reindeer Group Tour

In the morning, your guide will pick you up and escort you to the activity of the day: a reindeer sled ride followed by a traditional meal.

The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure.

Day 7: Hurtigruten Cruise

The morning is at leisure and in the afternoon, you will board your Hurtigruten Cruise. The ship is named after the dramatic Trollfjord in Lofoten. Hurtigruten Cruise offers comfortable and modern facilities, with extensive use of Norwegian wood and stone.

Day 8: Visiting North Cape

Today’s excursions starts off at Honningsvåg and takes you all the way to the North Cape, past a wild cliff coast that plunges down into the Arctic Ocean where you will admire treeless plains and picturesque fishing villages. In winter and spring, see the frozen shores, endless white plains and snow-capped mountains highlighted by dramatic weather and that special arctic light.

Day 9: Russian Border Excursion

Once you disembark from Hurtigruten Cruise, you will be taken to Kirkenes, where you will observe surprisingly fertile landscape with scrubs, birch and pine trees that manage to survive despite the harsh arctic climate. The region has an exciting and at times highly dramatic history, and you’ll hear more about this during the trip.

Next, you will visit “Skafferhullet”, the historical crossing point on the border between Norway and Russia, followed by Storskog – the border station between Norway and Russia. Before returning to Kirkenes, you will have a chance to see the small mining community of Bjørnevatn, as well as Pasvikdalen which boasts an imposing landscape filled with rolling green hills and robust trees, and is an area known to have Norway’s largest population of brown bears.

The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure for you to further explore Kirkenes.

Day 10: From Kirkenes to Oslo

Today, you will be transferred to Kirkenes Airport for your flight to Oslo. Upon arrival, you will be met by a Lightfoot Travel representative and be taken by private transfer to your hotel, Hotel Continental.

Hotel Continental has been a beacon of luxury since its opening in 1900 and it is ideally located in the center of Oslo. Each bedroom is individually designed in a classic contemporary style and the rooms vary from a tranquil courtyard view to rooms overlooking the Oslo fjord with terraces. The legendary restaurant, Theatercaféen, serves classic as well as new style dishes with a local touch.

You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore the surroundings or just relax.

Day 11: Private Walking Tour

Today, meet your guide at your hotel lobby for a private walking tour of the city. The guide will show you the city center of Oslo and explain the most important events in the history and traditions of the Norwegians.

Some highlights of the city include the Viking Ship Museum which is known for the well preserved long boats dating from year 1200 and Vigeland Sculpture Park known for its unique sculptures throughout the park.

Day 12: Departure

Today, you will depart Oslo and be transferred to the airport to catch your return flight home.
