Family Fun: Wildlife & Culture from Java to Komodo

Eight days of family fun await as you journey to discover some of Indonesia’s gems. Climb mountains, trek through the forest and even cruise from one island to another. Most importantly look out for the exotic wildlife: orang-utans, Komodo dragons.

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival in Yogyakarta, you will be met by your guide and be transferred to your hotel in the Borobudur area, Plataran Borobudur, which boasts magnificent view of Mount Merao, Menoreh Hills and is surrounded by lush teak forests.

En route, you will visit Candi Prambanan temple, very much under the radar, which dates back to the 9th century.

The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 2: Mount Merapi by Jeep and Candirejo village

In the morning, begin with a drive up Merapi Mountain and Merapi Volcano where you will bear witness to the remnants of a lava eruption at Kaliadem village.

Following your visit of Kaliadem and Merapi, you will continue to Candijero, a picturesque village, where you will interact with locals and see their farms and plantations. The end of the visit with a lesson in traditional Gamelan music before heading back to your hotel.

Day 3: Sunrise over Borobudur

Prepare for an early morning wake-up call to admire the stunning Borobudur temple by sunrise. Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the Southern Hemisphere. Once you’ve climbed the steps to the top, prepare for a glorious sunset.

Once you have visited the temple, return to your hotel for breakfast. Enjoy some time at leisure.

Day 4: Yogyakarta – Pangkalan Bun

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your onwards flight to Pangkalan Bun (approximately 2 hours). Your local guide will pick you up at the airport and take you to the Port of Kumai, where you will board a ‘Klotok’ (local boat) for a 2 hour scenic journey along the Sekonyer River. You will then disembark at Rimba Lodge, an eco lodge perched on the edge of Tanjung Putting National Park and only accessible by boat.

In the afternoon, observe Proboscic monkeys along the riverbanks, which are endemic to Borneo.

Day 5: River cruise and orang utan feeding

Start off your day with a ride upstream, through the thickening jungle to spot more wildlife. After disembarking and a short walk in the thick jungle, you will arrive at the orang-utan feeding platform. After, return to the boat for a cruise upriver in search of crocodiles.

Lunch will be served on board as you journey to the famed Camp Leakey. Once you arrive, take your time to visit the research centre and meet local rangers. Trek into the jungle and attempt to spot orang-utans.

Day 6: From Tanjung Putin National Park to Bali

After breakfast, head back to Pangkalan Bun to catch your flight to the exotic island of Bali.

Upon arrival into Bali, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Jimbaran Area, Kajumanis Jimbaran. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to relax and make the most of the beach.

Day 7: Bali to Rinca Island

Wake up early to catch your flight to Labuan Bajo. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, Plataran Komodo Resort.

Afterwards, make your way to the harbour and sail away to Sabolo Island for some snorkelling and all round fun time on the beach.

Day 8: Rinca Island

Start off your day with a visit to Rinca Island, home of deer, horses, buffalo, pigs, megapode birds and the famed Komodo Dragons.

Sail to Pantai Merah (Pink Beach, named so because of the pale pink sand colour of its beaches) followed by a hot trekking and snorkelling in Kambing Island to cool off.

Cruise to Labuan Bajo in the late afternoon the home of fruits bats, then proceed to your hotel.

Day 9: Komodo Island

Today, you will make your way to the famed Komodo Island, the true home of the Komodo Dragons. In addition to approximately 2000 Komodos, the island is home to deer, wild boar, buffalos and numerous birds.

After your visit, you will return to Labuhan Bajo. En route, stop by Bidadari Island where you can swim and snorkel before making your way to Plataran Komodo, your hotel.

Day 10: Departure

After breakfast, visit Batu Cermin Cave (Indonesian for Mirror Rock). Depending on the time of the year, the sun shines into a canyon in the morning which is reflected on the walls of the cave.

You will then be transferred to the airport for your return flight home.
