A Family Adventure in Kerala

To this day the region of Kerala is as deeply rooted in the trade that shaped the region as it was thousands of years ago. Kerala is the heart of India’s spice trade; mainly focusing in spices that you can find in your spice drawer. Not only does the region produce the spice that gives food a delectable flavor, but the region also smells just as aromatic.

On this 8 day adventure discover ancient Indian stories told through fantastical costumes that captivate the whole family, spend a day with an elephant, and discover the unique wonders of living on a houseboat for a night. Enjoy a Family Adventure in Kerala!

Day 1: Arrival in Cochin

Upon arrival in Cochin you will be met and transferred to your hotel, the Brunton Boatyard.

Day 2: Explore Cochin

After enjoying breakfast, you will meet with your guide. Your first day will begin with a tour of Fort Cochin, which was under foreign control up to the day that India gained their independence from the British Empire. Following the fort, you will tour both St. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Cathedral, both of which were built during the Portuguese reign. The Santa Cruz Cathedral is one of eight basilicas in all of India. The Jewish synagogue was built in the 4th century when Jewish merchants were still trading in South India and is a wonderful sight to see. The last sight of the day will be the Dutch Palace.

At night you will be able to watch the actors of the Kathakali Dance have their faces intricately painted. The Kathakali Dance style originated in Kerala before spreading over all of India and is a captivating way for the whole family to enjoy the ancient stories of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana

Day 3: From Cochin to Periyar

After breakfast you will be escorted via a private road to Peryiar, this will take roughly 5 hours. Once at Peryiar you will be met and assisted through check in at your hotel.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to tour the spice plantation and get to understand why Kerala’s cuisine is so incredibly unique from the rest of India. You will also be able to tour a high quality tea factory and really see how the process of making tea works.

You will spend the night at the Spice Village, which is a hotel in the form of a rustic mountain tribal village.

Day 4: Wildlife fun in Periyar

In the morning, you will meet with your tribal guide who will show you some great wildlife: birds, butterflies and much more.

Later on in the day, you will meet Asian elephants – an activity which kids and parents alike will thoroughly enjoy. You will have the chance to get up close and personal with these majestic critters, bathe and feed them.

Day 5: From Peryiar to the backwaters

Once you have had breakfast, you will be driven to Alleppey where you will board a luxury houseboat. As you cruise through the backwaters of Kerala you will enjoy the wonderful scenery and wildlife as well as being able to observe local people going about their day on the river. You will also be able to enjoy the local Kerala cuisine as you rest aboard this luxury houseboat.

Day 6: From the backwaters to Kumarakom

In the morning, you will disembark your houseboat and make your make to the Kumarakom Lake Resort.

This day is to be spent at your leisure, perhaps enjoy an Ayurvedic treatment; while the kids enjoy the pool.

Day 7: Day at leisure

This day is to be spent as you desire.

Lightfoot recommends (and can organise) these family friendly activities for you:

  • Water sports such as banana boats and speed boats.
  • Visiting the local bird sanctuary
  • Taking a pottery or weaving class
  • Learning to fish on the lake

Day 8: Departure

After a breakfast at your leisure you will be driven back to Cochin which will be roughly a 3-4 hour. You will then catch your flight home.
