The Old Continent is filled with overwhelmingly beautiful sites and fascinating history. For a summer family escape, it’s hard to resist the call of Spain and Greece, two countries where beach and culture intermingle seamlessly. A mix of relaxation, history and adventure awaits on this 15 day family holiday.

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred from the airport to your hotel, Hotel Grande Bretagne. Located in the heart of the Athens, Hotel Grande Bretagne, is a haven of uncommon grandeur and service. From the iconic Greek pillars to romantic views of the Acropolis, its enchanting location within walking distance of the  capital’s famed sites, the hotels offers a palatial ambience from which to  explore  the  city. The  business district  is within arm’s  reach, along  with the  museums, restaurants and historic landmarks that make a stay in Athens unforgettable.

You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore the surroundings or just relax.

Day 2: Athens Guided Walking Tour

Start off your day with a guided walking tour through Athens, during which time you will learn the history of the Acropolis. The  Acropolis is the most characteristic monument of the ancient Greek civilization and continues to stand as a symbol in many ways: it is the  symbol of democracy, Greek civilization and of Western civilization and European unity. During the walk you will also admire the Hephaisteion temple, Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora. You will also visit the New Acropolis Museum and have the opportunity to pass through the neighbourhoods of Athens and stop for a coffee or at the numerous small shops.

Day 3: Visiting Delphi

The site of the Delphic Oracle – the most important oracle in the classical Greek world – Delphi is surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, and easily the most beautiful ancient site in Greece. Allow yourself to marvel at the scenic views during the 2.5 hour drive to archaeological site. Later on in the day you will enjoy Greek local delicacies at the traditional village of Arachova.

Day 4: From Athens to Mykonos

Before making your way to Mykonos later on in the day, hop on your bike and take a cycling tour through Ancient Agora, the Kerameikos, the Roman Agora, the Ancient Theater of Dionyssos and Plaka.

Once you land in Mykonos, you will be met and transferred from the airport to your hotel, Grace Mykonos, an exclusive boutique hotel just north of Mykonos town, with a sea view above the sandy and protected beach of Agios Stefanos.

You will have the remainder of the day at leisure to explore the surroundings or just relax.

Day 5: Guided tour to Delos

In the morning, catch your boat transfer to Delos, where you will have a guided tour of this archaeological site, an exceptionally extensive and rich one that conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port. Delos was added on the World Heritage List in 1990.

Day 6 - 7: Days at leisure

You will spend the next two days at leisure, where you can opt to relax at your hotel, or start to explore the surroundings.

Here are just two suggested activities for your free time:

  • Horse riding experience : the tour will start in Ano Mera and end up on the secluded beach of Fokos.
  • Kayaking tour : sea kayaking provides an adventure that truly makes you feel like a liberated explorer in command of the sea and land. You can also swim and snorkel on beautiful beaches, observe the diverse wildlife and try out a local delicacy – sea  urchins!

Day 8: From Mykonos to Madrid

Today marks the next leg of your family adventure, onwards to Madrid. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel, Hotel De Las Letras, Set  in a restored historic building, this hotel offers a rooftop terrace with a stylish bar and spectacular views over Madrid.

In the evening, you may enjoy a flamenco show at one of Madrid´s best tablaos. Flamenco is a combination of intricate guitar playing, powerful singing ranging from the exuberant to the sorrowful, and passionate yet graceful dancing. A visit to Spain is not complete without a flamenco experience.

Day 9: Exploring Madrid

Madrid awaits! Start off your day with a tour a Museo del Prado, renowned for its large collection of paintings and sculptures but also drawings, engravings, coins and medals.  The visit will focus on works by Goya, Velazquez, Zurbarán and the paintings by El Greco. The expert guide will make the visit a fascinating and unforgettable museum experience.

In the evening, indulge your taste buds with the  Insider’s Tapas Tour, which will allow you to discover the intricacies and delightful simplicity of Spanish cuisine amidst informal, authentic settings. Ready yourself to sample hearty food in charming small bars in the heart of Madrid’s charismatic old Austria’s area.

Day 10: Visiting Toledo

Embark on a full-day trip to Toledo, 70km south of Madrid. Toledo and its narrow, winding streets and steps, stone houses and churches perfectly embody Spain’s past. In the  Middle Ages, Toledo was built on a “convergence” of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, and contains two of the few remaining medieval Spanish synagogues. Visit El Tránsito, a 13th century synagogue and the adjoining Jewish  Museum, devoted to the history and legacy of the Jewish Spain. At the centre of Toledo, you will find the soaring Gothic cathedral. Its Sacristy contains many paintings by El Greco, Van Dyck and Goya, plus an impressive collection of medieval garments and textiles.

Day 11: From Madrid to Barcelona

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the train station to catch your train to Barcelona. Founded by the Romans, Barcelona is a beautiful Mediterranean city that offers an impressive number of Gothic, Romanesque, Modernist and contemporary monuments. Walking through the beautiful and vibrant Barcelona streets and enjoying the friendly atmosphere and the excellent Mediterranean weather is always a delight!

Upon arrival in Barcelona, make your way to the arrival hall where your driver will transfer you to your next hotel, Barcelona Center Hotel. Centrally located, this hotel has an easy access to many of Barcelona’s attractions, such as the shopping haven of Las Ramblas.

Day 12: Half-Day Biking Tour Of Barcelona

There is much to explore in Barcelona, and to cover more grounds and enjoy the area even more, nothing beats a bike ride through the city. Make your way to the major sites, which include the Gothic Wuarter, the Old Harbour, the Ciutadella Park, the Sagrada Familia, the Olympic Port and Gaudi’s fabulous monuments.

Day 13: Tour to Montserrat and Gaudí

In the morning, you will visit the mountain of Montserrat, a massive rock over 4000 feet high, with weird shapes and rounded peaks that jut into the sky. This unique natural park has paths, stairs, caves, chapels and hermitages scattered over the mountain, extraordinary landscapes and wonderful views. Enjoy the picturesque drive along the Llobregat river and up the spectacular mountain. Nestled between mountain peaks, the monastery is the center and symbol of Catalan faith and identity. The Benedictine monastery is nearly 1000 years  old, perched half way up the mountain and sheltered by its peaks.

After lunch you will return to Barcelona and spend the afternoon uncovering the world of visionary architect Antonio Gaudi and his contemporaries. You might also visit the iconic Casa Milà, a fantasy in stone which appears to have been carved out of the living rock, hence its nickname: La Pedrera, which means “the  quarry.”

Day 14: Full day private tour to Girona and Figeures

Just a little over an hour away from Barcelona lies the historic city of Girona. The internationally acclaimed beaches, spectacular mountains at the  eastern tip of the  Pyrenees, a rugged  rocky coastline reaching  up to the  French border, and the green rolling hills of rural Gerona, make Girona a popular destination for visitors throughout the  year.

Spend  the afternoon exploring Catalunya’s  medieval villages. The villages of Pals, Peratallada, Roses and Torroella de Montgrí (among  others) with their castles and lanes give you an idea of what life was like centuries ago, an intriguing insight into Spain’s past.  In the  early part of  the  last  century Cadaques was a meeting point of many Spanish writers, poets and  painters, including Lorca and Picasso. You can also visit Dali’s summer house here yet the real attraction lies in the whitewashed streets and the atmosphere of this picturesque fishing village. Or, you may prefer to head to Figueres, Salvador Dalí’s hometown. Here you can visit the  Dalí Theatre- Museum, designed by the artist  himself and which contains a broad range of works spanning his career.

Day 15: Departure

Today, you will depart Barcelona and be transferred to the airport to catch your return flight home.
