A Family Adventure in Peru

Peru is a great option for families looking for a more active holiday, and for those who want to inject a dose of culture into their next family holiday. From exploring Lima by bike, to spotting wildlife in the Amazon Rainforest and learning about Inca culture at Machu Picchu, the kids will have lots to tell their friends back at school.

Day 1: Arrival into Lima

On arrival into Lima airport, you will be met by a Lightfoot representative and transferred to your hotel.

Stay: Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores

Day 2: Lima by bike

Get to know Lima by bike this morning, learning all about the art, architecture and history of the city as you follow your guide around Miraflores and Barranco. Your guide will explain all about the street art and street food, which you will of course be able to sample, and show you the mansions and old houses that line the streets. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the bay before lunch.

In the afternoon you will see two other sides to Lima – the colonial and the modern. Starting in the Main Square, admire the Government’s Palace, the Cathedral of Lima and the City Hall, all of which are great examples of Lima’s colonial heritage. Inside the Cathedral, admire the numerous chapels and learn about Peru’s religious history which is reflected in the varying architectural styles, ranging from Renaissance to Neo-Classical. For a slice of modern Peru, head to San Isidro which houses the city’s financial district.

Day 3: Amazon Rainforest adventure

This morning you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado, from where you will start your three-day adventure in the Amazon Rainforest.

On arrival visit the Butterfly House before jumping on board a boat that takes you into the Amazon Rainforest and to your hotel, Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge. You will meet your guide and choose from a number of activities to kick start your time here. We recommend a guided walk into the reserve where you can explore the Amazon Basin. This provides a great introduction to the jungle, and is a great opportunity for bird-watching.

Stay: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Day 4: Canoeing and wildlife spotting on Lake Sandoval

Set out this morning for a day of wildlife spotting. Glide across Lake Sandoval in a wooden canoe and look out for the endangered river otter, red howler monkeys, anacondas and side-neck turtles. After lunch climb up into the trees on a treetop walk, keeping an eye out for toucans, woodpeckers and the three-toed sloth. Back on terra firma, head to the swamps to observe the various species of birds, mammals, and amphibians.

Stay: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Day 5: Fly to Cusco and explore the Sacred Valley

This morning you will fly to Cusco and head straight for the Sacred Valley. On the way to the hotel, stop at Awanakancha and see the llamas, alpacas, Vicuñas, and Guanacos that live in the Andes region. You will also have the chance to speak to the local villagers about how they produce their colourful textile art. Stop at Cochahuasi, an animal sanctuary dedicated to rescuing, caring, and preserving native species, some of which are in danger of becoming extinct. Look out for condors flying overhead while you’re here.

Stay: Hotel Sol & Luna

Day 6: Visit Pachar and the last remaining Incan towns

Spend the morning rafting in the Sacred Valley, starting in Pachar and going down towards Ollantaytambo and its amazing Inca terraces. Hold on tight as you pass the rapids, bracing yourself for “El Resbaladero” (The Slide), a strong class 3 rapid that includes waves and small whirlpools.

In the afternoon visit Ollantaytambo, one of the last remaining Incan towns and discover the large archaeological complex of what used to serve as a way side inn for royal delegations on long journeys.

Day 7: Bike from Lamay to Pisac

Get back on the bikes today and bike from Lamay to Pisac, where you can walk through the crafts market and sample some of their food. In the afternoon you will be taken to Piuray Lake which has perfectly flat water for paddle boarding on. Before taking to the waters, you will meet a local family whose home is on the shore of the lake. They will tell you a bit about their culture and lifestyle, and welcome you into their home for a hot drink after your paddle boarding session.

Day 8: Visit Machu Picchu, one of the new Seven Wonders of The World

Today set off for Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a must see on any trip to Peru. The train journey to and from the citadel is spectacular, and prepared to be entranced when you enter macho Picchu itself – the children certainly will be when your guide explains about its history.

Day 9: Cultural day in Cusco with a trip to the ChocoMuseo

This morning enjoy a tour of Cusco and the nearby archaeological ruins, the Imperial City. Start at Korikancha (the Golden Temple) – a temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, whose interior walls were said to have been covered in gold.

Continue the day with a stroll through the Main Square, where you will discover the Cathedral and admire its exquisite vestibules and priceless paintings from the Cusco School of the 17th and 18th centuries. Afterwards, go to the nearby ruins: Tambomachay with their water fountains; Kenko, the religious centre; Puca-Pucara, the red fortress, and finally the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a colossal structure of enormous stones, carved and fitted together with incredible precision.
