Classic India: From Delhi to Goa

India is often seen as a fusion of cultures and religions that spans the ages. India’s vibrant history has witnessed the birth of the Buddha, the introduction of both Islam and Christianity, and the colonization of its country by the British. Today, India, because of its past, has created its own image that incorporates aspects from all the ages. This fusion of eras, which be found in its architecture, food, and art, makes India a unique and intriguing land.

On this 15 day expedition you will witness the contrast of British and Mughal eras within one city, visit the majestic Taj Mahal, and explore the ancient artwork of the Goa temples.

Day 1: Arrive in Delhi

After landing in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, you will be met at the gate by a representative who will escort you through immigration and baggage claim. After you will be transferred to your hotel, The Imperial, and assisted through check-in.

Day 2: Exploring Delhi

After breakfast, you will explore Delhi. You will experience the contrast of the Old Delhi, built by the Mughal rulers, and the New Delhi which was the capital of the British-Indian Empire.

You will begin this day with Jama Masjid, which is the largest mosque in all of India. In fact the original name for this mosque roughly translates to “the mosque that commands the view of the world”. After visiting Jama Masjid, you will witness the Red Fort which was designed to be the citadel of Delhi during the Mughal Empire.

Afterwards you will proceed to New Delhi and observe the architecture of the British-Indian Empire. Following this you will visit Humayun’s Tomb, the tomb of the second Mugahl emperor which is said to have inspired other architecture, such as the Taj Mahal.

You will end the day will a visit to Qutub Minar, which is the highest stone tower and the tallest Islamic structure in India

Day 3: From Delhi to Agra

In the morning, after breakfast you will be transported over land to Agra (roughly 4 hours). Once in Agra you will be met by a representative who will check you in to your hotel, the ITC Mughal. You will then have free time to enjoy lunch at your hotel.

After lunch you will tour the Agra Fort, which was constructed by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. From the Agra Fort you will move on to the majestic Taj Mahal. This structure was built by the Mughal Emperor Shan Jahan in memory of his beloved wife. You will be viewing the Taj Mahal at sunset which will highlight the true beauty and impressiveness of this monument.

Day 4: From Agra to Jaipur

The journey continues on to Jaipur in Rajasthan. The drive will take roughly 6 hours. After check-in, at the Samode Haveli, you will have the rest of the day for your leisure.

Day 5: Visit Amber Fort and Jaipur

After breakfast, start your day with a visit to the Amber Fort. This fort combines both Hindu and Muslim architecture. If you would prefer something a bit adventurous, instead of walking up to the fort you can arrange to be carried up via elephant! You will then proceed to visit the City Palace which was home to the Maharaja. You will also see Jantar Mantar, built by the maharaja, which is considered to be the biggest observatory ever built. You may also take a rickshaw ride through the local market.

Day 6: From Jaipur to Jodhpur

After breakfast you will embark on a drive that will take you to Jodhpur (approximately 6 hours). Once in Jodhpur you will check into The Raasyour accommodation for the next two days. You will have the remainder of the afternoon to discover Jodhpur or relax in the hotel.

Day 7: Visit Mehrangargh Fort and Bishnoi village

Start off your day with a visit to the Mehrangargh Fort, which is known for its intricate carvings. Following this you will visit the Jaswant Thada which is a memorial built by the Maharajah Jaswant Singh, and is thought to have been inspired by the Taj Mahal.

In the afternoon you will take a jeep safari to experience the Bishnoi village life, where you will be able to observe the local desert craftsmen, the local flora and fauna. For a little adventure, climb up the sand dunes.

Day 8: From Jodhpur to Udaipur

In the morning you will start your 5 hour drive to Udaipur. En route to Udaipur you will stop to visit the stunning marble Jain temples at Ranakpur and the beautiful valley of the Aravalli. You will also visit Chaumukha, which is a four faced temple.

You will arrive and check in at your hotel the Devi Garh, where you will spend two nights.

Day 9: City Palace visit and boat cruise

After breakfast, you will visit the City Palace. The City Palace has the world’s first Silver Museum as well as the world’s first Royal Instrument Museum. You will then move on the visit the Jagdish Temple. This temple has three different stories and is known for its intricately carved pillars.

In the early evening you will enjoy a lovely boat cruise on Lake Pichola as the sun sets.

Day 10: From Udaipur to Mumbai

Today, you have the entire day at leisure, before catching your flight to Mumbai.  When you land, you will be met by a representative who will check you in to your hotel.

You will be staying at The Taj Mahal for two nights.

Day 11: Exploring Mumbai

In the morning, you will visit the Dabba Wallas at the Church Gate and CST Railway Station. You will see how thousands of lunches are transported through Mumbai to their clients. Afterwards you will be taking the local railway for about 20 minutes until you reach Mahalaxmi Station. You will ten drive to the Mani Bhavan to visit the spectacular Gandhi Museum. From there, you will be going to the Lalbagh Market, perfect for shopping for souvenirs.

You will then drive to Kala Ghoda and stroll through the art district of Mumbai’s British Heritage district. On this stroll you will visit a studio where you can have your own art work made up to take home! You will also be visiting the Prince of Wales Museum that houses rare artefacts from China, Japan, India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Day 12: From Mumbai to Goa

After a leisurely breakfast you will be transported to the airport to catch a flight to Goa. When you land you will be met by a representative who will transfer you to your hotel, Leela Hotel, where you will spend three nights.

Once checked in the rest of the day is up to you. You can relax by the beach or you could enjoy the following amenities:

Day 13: Cultural visit in Goa

After breakfast you will be visiting to gorgeous Hindu temples of Goa. Start off with the Shantadurga Temple, which is dedicated to the Goddess Parvati & Lord Naguesh followed by the Mangueshi Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Then, make your way to Old Goa to visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Catherdral. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is dedicated to the infant Jesus and is the resting place of St. Francis Xavier. ‘Golden Bell’ is the largest bell in Goa and is located in the Se Catherdral.  After you will drive to the capital of Goa, Panjim, where you will have time to shop to your heart’s content.

The rest of the day is to be spent at your leisure.

Day 14: Free time in Goa

This day is to be spent purely at your leisure. Make the most of the beaches and relax or continue to explore the city.

After a leisurely breakfast, you will be escorted you to the airport to catch flight your onward flights home.
