Classic Burma

As the world begins to sit up and take notice of Burma (Myanmar) as a tourist destination, now is the time to visit this untouched and refreshingly unspoiled country.

This itinerary takes in the main highlights of Myanmar, including the must see 3,000 temples of Bagan, the vastness of Inle Lake, the former capital of Rangoon and the ‘cultural capital’ Mandalay.  In addition, you have a few days relaxing on the beaches of Ngapali.

Day 1: Arrival into Yangon

Fly to Yangon, the gateway to Burma. This former capital city still retains many crumbling remains of British rule and is the perfect place to start your trip. Spend some time in the afternoon with your guide discovering the sights and sounds of the city before heading to the Shewedagon pagoda – unarguably the jewel of the city.

Tonight you will stay at the charming Savoy Myanmar. Savoy Hotel is a colonial boutique hotel that has retained the charm of a bygone era. Offering exceptionally attentive service and warm hospitality, it will appeal to travellers seeking a serene and relaxing escape in the heart of this fascinating city.

Stay: Savoy Myanmar

Day 2: From Yangon to Bagan

Today you will jump on a short flight to Bagan. Home to over 3,000 temples, a stop in Bagan is unquestionably a must while in Burma. Lesser visited than the more famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia, or Borobodur in Indonesia, it can sometimes be possible to have a whole temple to yourself, a luxury that is sure to vanish as Burma opens its doors to more tourists.

Stay at Aureum Palace Hotel which is regarded as Myanmar’s most luxurious resort. After a busy day of sightseeing, make sure you relax in the outdoor pool which overlooks temples and pagodas – the ideal place to cool off from the afternoon heat whilst you enjoy the scenic views.

Stay: Aureum Palace Hotel

Day 3: Guided tour of Bagan

A full day tour by car, with an experienced guide through Bagan will show you the best known temples of the area. Start the day climbing a pagoda to get a first impressive view over the whole area. From here the guide plans his way to some of the other amazing temples that have been here for hundreds of years. Places like the Ananda, Dhammayangyi, Sulamani, and Thatbyinnyu will certainly impress you.

Have lunch at a local restaurant and around 4pm continue the tour by horse cart to Pyathagyi pagoda for sunset with some refreshing drinks served. The guide will stop at any temple of your choice, just ask!

Stay: Aureum Palace Hotel

Day 4: From Bagan to Inle Lake

Your early start this morning will be rewarded with a spectacular hot air balloon ride over the plains of Bagan. The flight lasts about 45 minutes and offers fabulous photo opportunities.  Spend the rest of the morning exploring more of the temples, or simply relaxing over a leisurely breakfast before heading to the airport for your flight to Heho – gateway to the beautiful Inle Lake. Transfer to the beautiful Inle Princess Resort on the shores of the lake where you will spend the next couple of nights.

Stay: Inle Princess Resort

Day 5: Discovering Inle Lake

Spend a day exploring the vast Inle Lake.  Stretching over 35km, the best way to explore is by boat and you will visit some of the cottage industries on the lake where old traditions still hold sway, as well as the lake’s traditional markets and cheroot factory.

Stay: Inle Princess Resort

Day 6: From Inle Lake to Kalaw

Heading back to Heho airport, you are only a short hop, skip and jump from Kalaw. You will spend the day with a guide who specializes in Elephant conservation exploring the forest surrounding Kalaw. There is a local project that focuses on protecting elephants and traditions of local people living in the near vicinity, and you will find yourselves at the centre of this.

Enjoy a delicious lunch with local specialities (often from Nepalese origins) served in a traditional village, in the jungle or in camp. After lunch, head out to help the mahout wash and feed the elephants.

Spend the night at the Amara Mountain Resort, a charming colonial residence with views over Kalaw and the Shan mountains. At first glance, it feels more like a tiny Northern European Village in the woods than a hotel in a Burmese hill town.

Stay: Amara Mountain Resort

Day 7: From Kalaw to Ngapali

Return to Heho for your flight to Ngapali Beach. Spend the next few nights at the Sandoway Resort, nestled amongst the coconut palms on the pristine beach of Ngapali.

Stay: Sandoway Resort

Day 8 - 11: Days at leisure in Ngapali Beach

Ngapali beach, the perfect place to spend the last few days of your holiday. The resort is designed in traditional South East Asian elegance and is constructed with local materials with various hard woods, stone carvings and marbles.

This beautiful stretch of white sand and glistening coast-line offers the perfect end to your trip, and with several 4 star properties located here, as well as a 9-hole golf course, there is enough to keep everyone out of mischief.
