Canada’s Rockies Rainforests

A 16 day tour through British Columbia and Rocky Mountain National Parks where you will discover the beauty of the untouched wildlife in Canada. With classic sightseeing destinations, adventures through rainforests, and amazing mountain scenery, this trip through Western Canada is perfect for photography and outdoor enthusiasts.

Begin your journey in the modern and multi-cultural Vancouver, and along the way, get to visit Pacific Rim National Park, where you will get the opportunity to catch sight of Gray Whales and sealions. Further on, you will pass by the majestic Shannon Falls, drive through the spine of the Rockies, and be mesmerized by the neverending glaciers and lakes.

Days 1 - 3: Arrive in Vancouver

On arrival at Vancouver airport you will be transferred by a Lightfoot representative to the Fairmont Waterfront hotel. As Canada’s third-largest metropolitan centre, the city has a great deal to offer. Spend three days exploring some of the main sights which include the Grouse Mountain Skyride, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Chinatown or the famous shopping district of Robson Street.

Days 4 - 5: Vancouver to Victoria

Leaving Vancouver, drive south to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal for the ferry ride across to Swartz Bay. Enjoy the spectacular view of the Gulf Islands as you cross the Strait of Georgia. Spend the day exploring Victoria before heading to the Butchart Gardens in the afternoon to roam around 50 acres of shrubs, trees and bulbs all bursting with colour.

Day 6: Victoria to Tofino

Start the drive along the rugged West Coast of Vancouver Island towards Pacific Rim National Park. En-route, you will be stop at the ‘City of Totems’ to visit the Quw’utsun’ Heritage Village for an insight into the history of the area. Pass through Chemainus, famous for its giant murals which adorn the exterior walls throughout the town. You will pass through the majestic Sutton Pass and Sawtooth Range of the Cascade Mountains before arriving in Tofino in the mid afternoon.

Day 7: Enjoying the great outdoors in Tofino

Walk along the famed Long Beach with its miles of pristine sand and pounding surf, or explore the rainforests on a selection of well groomed trails. Midafternoon enjoy a 3 hour whale watch cruise through the Clayoquot Sound, revealing sensational scenary and wildlife such as Gray Whales, Sea Lions, Porpoises and Killer Whales. The area is also known for its variety of birds, including tufted puffins and resident bald eagles.

In the evening return to the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Day 8: Tofino to Parksville

Depart Tofino to Parksville for your return journey to the East Coast. En-route, picture stops should be made at Cathedral Grove to enjoy the splendour of 800 year old Douglas Fir and Cedar as well as the Mars Water-Bombers at Sproat Lake, the world’s two largest water-bombers used for the sole purpose of putting out forest fires.

Day 9: Parksville to Whistler

Take the ferry from Departure Bay across fjord like waters with mountains blanketed with virgin forests and glaciated peaks. Travel along the scenic Sea through Sky Highway and on to Whistler. Along the way marvel at the cascading Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief Rock where climbers from all over the globe migrate to climb the granite cliffs.

Upon arrival in Whistler head to the Fairmont Chateau, tucked away at the base of the Blackcomb Mountain.

Day 10: Alpine explorations in Whistler

The Fairmont Chateau is ideally placed to explore this charming alpine resort. Pick from an extensive range of summer activities; including golf, water sports on any of the 5 lakes and numerous rivers, to mountain top dining. Be sure to take the Gondola up Whistler Mountain and then rise to over 7,000 feet via Whistler’s premier open chair lift. At the top of the Peak Chair, guests will be treated to unbelievable view of the glacier and the snow-capped peaks.

Day 11: Whistler to Clearwater

Travel north today from the mountain village via the upper elevations of the Duffey Lake Road. Enjoy breath-taking views of Joffee Glacier and snow capped Mount Currie that rises to a height of 2,596 metres. Continue the journey north to Lillooet, known as the land of the Gold Rush Trail and was ‘Mile Zero’ of the Old Caribou Wagon Road during the Gold Rusj years. Now the area is home to the largest Canadian producers of the medicinal plant, Ginseng. Make a stop at 100 mile house to the gold town of Cache Creek, where you stop to visit the historic Hat Creek Ranch which literally takes you back to the days of the gold rush.

Day 12: Clearwater to Jasper

Set out for Jasper along the scenic Yellowhead Highway and take in the breathtaking vistas of the steep-walled gorges and crashing falls of the North Thompson River. On your journey today, perhaps you will get a glimpse of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Leaving British Columbia you enter Alberta and Jasper National Park. Jasper was originally a tent city serving the railway, and now a quaint mountain village.

Day 13: Visiting Jasper

Jasper offers many terrific scenic highlights to explore. Take a tram ride up Whistlers mountain, or visit Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed lakes in the world, and enjoy a 90 minute cruise heading toward the south end of this postcard setting (Maligne Lake cruise not included).

Day 14: Jasper to Banff

Your scenic drive today takes you through the spine of the Canadian Rockies. View a never-ending procession of mammoth mountains, jagged peaks, over 100 glaciers and pristine emerald colour lakes. Along the way see such sights as the Colombia Icefield and take an Ice Explorer ride onto the glacier. Look out for the Sarbach Glacier, Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, with Bow Glacier providing the backdrop, and Crowfoot Glacier before your arrival into Lake Louise. From Lake Louise choose the Bow Valley Parkway, beside the Bow River with an option for you to take a stop at Johnson Canyon and walk along the paved footpath to either the lower or upper waterfalls before continuing to Banff.

Day 15: Strolling through Banff

Spend a whole day exploring Banff and the area around it. In town you’ll find lots of exciting restaurants, cafes, museums and places to shop. Check out the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, Banff Gondola where you will see a panoramic view of the Bow Valley, and then take a dip in the hot mineral pools at the Upper Hot Springs.

Day 16: Departure

Depart the Rocky Mountains at your own leisure to the Great Central Plains to roll to the east for 2000 kilometres and extend as far south as Mexico. This is ‘cattle ranching country’ and the breadbasket of Canada. Your tour concludes with the return of your rental vehicle in Calgary. Transfer to Calgary Airport for your flight home.
