Cambodia’s Green Season

A lot of travellers see the phrases “Green Season” or “Shoulder Season” and immediately disregard a holiday destination. However, Cambodia in particular has an amazing green season, and this is why April-September is our favourite time of year to visit!

  • It’s the most beautiful time of the year to visit Cambodia. The endless seas of bright green rice fields and sugar palm trees make overland travel a joy, and it’s a photographer’s paradise.
  • There is no dust .
  • It gets nice and cool in the evenings.
  • The rains are very strong sometimes, but only last about an hour in the afternoon. Before you know it, it’s dry again.
  • Visits to the Tonle Sap lake and all waterways are much more pleasant and you have the option to travel by boat from Siem Reap to Battambang and Phnom Penh.
  • There are far less tourists, and it makes temple and sight visits much more personal and enjoyable.
  • The amazing low season promotions make for an exceptionally high value holiday.

Day 2: Exploring Siem Reap

Depart early in the in the morning for sunrise at the fabulous temple lake of Srah Srang. Srah Srang is particularly amazing in the early morning when all you can hear are the sounds of the jungle and watch the sunrise over the “king’s bath” with the fabulous jungle temple of Ta Phrom behind you.

After sunrise at Sra Sarong you will start to visit to Ta Phrom before the crowds arrive and then to the South Gate of Angkor Thom where you can take a quiet optional 1km walk along the wall and through the jungle to a hidden temple. Then visit the temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break for a local lunch within the park grounds.

After lunch, the whole late afternoon is set aside for a visit to the main temple, Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is one of mankind’s greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It was constructed in the early 12th century and later mysteriously abandoned by Khmer civilization. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists come to visit Cambodia.

Finish the day with an unforgettable sunset on the quiet east side of Angkor Wat.

Phnom Kulen is widely regarded as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. The waters are regarded as holy, given the sacred carvings which also include a stone representation of the Hindu god Vishnu lying on his serpent Ananta, with his wife Lakshmi at his feet. You will also visit Preah Ang Thom that houses a large statue of Buddha. It was built in the 16th century and is eight meters high. After a cool refreshing swim in the waterfall you will have a local Khmer lunch local lunch.

Afterwards on the return to Siem Reap you’ll take a scenic drive to Banteay Srei, loosely translated as “Citadel of Women.” It houses some of the finest and best-preserved examples of classical Khmer bas-relief.
