This October, get in touch with your cultural side with Lightfoot’s insider tips on historical sights, festivals and how to get to know the local people. With a tailor-made itinerary we can give you an authentic taste of the local culture in a way that suits you best.
Northern Thailand is beautiful at this time of year, and the Four Seasons Tented Camp (one of our favourite properties) is ideal for families with older children. Learn to be an elephant mahout and come just about as close as you will ever get to elephants on a daily basis at this spectacular property.
Luang Praband in Laos is also a lovely getaway with beautiful colonial buildings, bustling markets, and of course the majestic Meking winding its way through the town and colliding the the Nam Khan River. A trip to Luang Praband is ideally coupled with the biggest cultural attraction of them all, Cambodia’s breath-taking Angkor Wat.
Northern Vietnam is stunning and you’ll get plenty of sun sailing through Halong Bay. Kayak through hidden caves, lagoons and visit unspoilt beaches in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another fantastic option for a dose of culture combined with a hit of adventure is the magical Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. Hiking trails abound, there are two October festivals to enjoy, or you can just sit back and relax and absorb the beauty of it all. Uma Paro is a favourite for its spectacular views from high up in the hills, yoga classes overlooking the Paro Valley, Como Shambhala spa, and all the activities they organise from biking and guided day hikes to monastery visits.
October is the best time of year to visit China with the blisteringly hot summers over in Beijing and Shanghai, but before it becomes bitingly cold up north. In Beijing, visit remote parts of the Great Wall with a personal expert guide, tour through the famous hutongs, or alleyways, and meet the brash, loud and lovingly warm people that define this city. Stroll through the French Concession in Shanghai, stopping at little boutiques, coffee shops, and the city’s famous dumpling restaurants along the way, and then dine on the Bund at night on a balcony overlooking the Huangpu River and Pudong. The mountainous province of Yunnan is also spectacular this time of year with snow-capped mountains, plenty of hiking trails, and some of the cosiest lodges we’ve found in the country.
If you’re looking for a city break or wining and dining holiday, October also offers the last chance to see the best side of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, located on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Indulge in fresh, local food and some of the best new world wines there are.
