Zermatt

Overview

Zermatt is the epitome of Alpine beauty; a fairy-tale 19th century Swiss village set against the iconic Matterhorn – a mighty peak, conquered for the first time by British mountaineer Edward Whymper some 150 years ago. Its high-altitude glaciers mean you can ski in Zermatt 365 days a year.

It started life as a simple farming village and it shows. A large slice of chocolate-box quaintness exudes from its hotchpotch of steep, winding streets. The village is car-free, but not traffic-free. Electric buggies operating as hotel shuttles or public taxis zip around the streets making moving between restaurants and bars very easy. And dining here is serious business. One does not simply ski in Zermatt, not when you can dine on the world’s finest fondue and raclette. Zermatt is famous for both.

Zermatt’s ski area covers some 360km and is globally recognised as top-tier ski resort. Our experience of Zermatt has found that it is one of the best resorts in the world for intermediate, while also being a superb choice for families. Its glacial-skiing, spectacular off-piste trails and a cluster of 4,000 metre plus peaks on the Klein Matterhorn ensure there is plenty to challenge advanced skiers. Zermatt’s high-altitude makes it noticeably snowsure the year around.

Lightfoot Tip: The Matterhorn is not visible from all parts of the village. If you want the famous view from your balcony, stay on the east side of the village, or at the south end. Europe’s highest cable car trip up to the Klein Matterhorn has excellent views.

Highly photogenic and blessed with that slightly intangible ‘tucked away’ atmosphere you only experience in the Alps, Zermatt Scores the highest marks possible for charm and scenery. Lightfoot Travel’s Ski Designers create ultra-luxury ski holidays to Zermatt, tailor made to your exact requirements. Find out what we can do for you.
