Vestlandet

Overview

Steeped in Norse mythology and home to much of the nation’s most breathtaking terrain, Western Norway or Vestlandet is an essential Norway experience.

Its largest city, enchanting Bergen, is packed with history and chocolate box charm, and best know as the gateway to the magnificent Norwegian fjords. Seven great mountains including Floyen and Ulriken surround the city, adding to a magical fairy-tale setting.

One of our favourite trips is to take the funicular railway to the summit of Mount Floyen – an absolutely stunning train journey that rewards you with sweeping panoramas of snow dusted treetops and jagged fjords.

Just a snowball’s throw from Bergen is Hardangerfjord – the third largest fjord in the world and a spectacular showcase for the extreme beauty of Norway. Cruise through huge overhanging ravines, past thundering waterfalls and snow-crowned mountains and colourful meadows and fruit orchards in the spring.

Bergen was once a thriving fishing port, and has stood for nearly a thousand years – it is even mentioned in the old Vikings Sagas! The highlight is the historic quays of Bryggen, a Unesco World Heritage site of cobblestone streets, creaky boardwalks, bustling fish market, cosy pubs and wooden merchant houses.
