Otavalo

Overview

Otavalo lies in the breathtaking Northern Andes surrounded by the rolling caldera of Mojanda, cloud forests and alpine meadows. It sits in the shadow of ancient and mighty Imbabura stratovolcano, named Taita (father) in the local dialect. Otavalo is an ‘under-the-radar’ South American destination, offering equal parts adventure and culture.

Otavalo is an area of deep cultural importance in Ecuador, with old traditions well preserved to this day – despite its market town roots predating even the Incas. It has long been a crossroads for weary Andean travellers and the largely indigenous population have contributed to one of the best craft markets in South America, with a huge array of artisan and handcrafted goods.

The surrounding Andean landscapes offer spectacular hiking, horse riding and biking trails, the best of which are handpicked by our Travel Designers with the help of experienced local guides. Trekking to the mighty summit of Imbabura itself is challenging, but incredibly rewarding with some of the most impressive vistas our team has experienced in the Andes.

We’ll have you staying in a restored farmhouse estate like the 17th century colonial Hacienda Cusin for the authentic Andean experience or the 16th century Hacienda Zuleta perched high in the Andes at nearly 10,000ft.
