Home to the Intha people, the canals and tributaries outlined by tall reeds stretch for 35 kilometres at Inle Lake, Myanmar. Here, the locals traverse the waterways using a unique leg-rowing technique, the same way they have done for years.
The shallow waters of Inle Lake stretch for 35 kilometres, ringed by rolling hills making for a picturesque view. These can also be explored on foot while visiting the minority villages of Palaung, Pa-O, Taungthu and Danu. The Phaung Daw Oo Paya is one of the holiest sites in the Shan State as it houses a collection of five highly-revered small Buddha images, covered with gold leaves.
Of course, the best way to explore Inle Lake is by boat to visit the thriving communities, the floating market and cottage industries such as silk weaving and cheroot rolling. A number of monasteries and Buddhist temples can also be visited. The peaceful body of water is also the perfect setting to while away your days' canoeing, cycling and walking through the lush countryside.
