Chamonix

One of our favourite resorts in Europe is Chamonix. The most accessible of the Alpine resorts is a fragmented region of many ski areas, hamlets and villages.

Chamonix is a busy little town of Victorian hotels and mountain adventurers at the foot of Mont Blanc in France. Les Houches, Les Bossons, Les Praz, Les Tines, Montroc, Le Lavancher, Argentière, Le Buet, Le Tour, Vallorcine – are all considered to be within Chamonix. No other place does all-mountain skiing better than Chamonix. With long runs below the tree line for bad-weather skiing, and big glacier runs at high altitude, it is the mountain resort for all seasons, and all reasons. The valley itself is similarly varied, with all types of accommodation from Relais & Châteaux boutique hotels to privately owned luxury chalets.

Courchevel

Courchevel's ski area is the most famous of the Trois Vallées, the biggest linked ski area in the world. We love swanky Courchevel 1850 – by far the highest village – with its glamorous hotels, six Michelin-starred restaurants and an airstrip.

Bordeaux

Welcome to the wine capital of the world! Bordeaux, often referred to in French as La Belle Endormie (‘Sleeping Beauty’) is currently enjoying cultural renaissance and is, of course, home to world-class vineyards and wineries.

Provence

Its lavender landscapes inspired a generation of post-Impressionist painters; its rustic country cuisine is envied the world over; its history and traditional way of life remain lovingly preserved.
