Antigua

Overview

Close your eyes and picture the archetypal Caribbean island. Sun-drenched landscapes fringed with elegant palms and dazzling white sand, surrounded by crystal clear seas. Sound about right? You’ve just described Antigua. Encompassing just over 280 square kilometres of beautiful coastline, Antigua is one of the top Caribbean vacation destinations, offering 365 white sand beaches – a new beach for every day of the year.

The island has a long history of sailing. Horatio Nelson, of Royal Navy fame, was stationed here in 1784, and more than 230 years later, Antigua continues to attract seafarers, as host of the region’s biggest regatta, and winter home to some of the world’s most spectacular megayachts. Water sports abound, with diving, swimming, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and some of the best kite surfing anywhere on the planet.

Of course landlubbers will still find plenty to do with narrow roads to traverse, candy-coloured villages to discover, historic sights to explore, and spectacular sunsets to bid adieu at the end of each day. Indulge in total rest and relaxation, sipping tropical cocktails, dancing to steel drum bands, or relaxing beachside in the shade of an umbrella next to the sea. Wander the colourful capital of St. John’s, where fashion and culture are in plentiful form. Visit the English Harbour, home to Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, a restored Georgian shipyard with kilometres of nature trails and the ruins of historic forts. Play a round of golf on one of the scenic courses that dot the island. The options are endless, and the days feel luxuriously long.
